25 meters for pistol shooting?

i want thoughts on this: there is a local sportman's club which i can afford to join. but in reading over their regulations, it seems the pistol range is 25 meters. i feel like 10 meters is where one needs to start working. so, would you pay to join a range that only lets you shoot this distance?

No. I train and have to qualify for LEOSA at 25 yards but that is one phase of the shooting. 3,7, and 15 yards make up the bulk of training and qualification. Hitting at 25 yards is very good training but your much more likely to need more shooting at the shorter ranges.

Many ranges are set up with 25 and 50 meter/yard ranges for pistol and 25/50/75/100 yards for rimfire/rifle with some ranges offering 300-1000 m/y ranges.

It's common practice to set targets closer than max range, if you prefer.

No target stands at closer than 25m? No problem - check with range if you can tape targets to cardboard boxes stacked closer or bring your own range approved target stands if they are not available.

i think i am going to talk to the grand poobah tomorrow about all this. i don't know how flexible they are, or how desperate for new members. they are (it seems) mostly about trap shooting, which i could imagine myself getting obsessed with, under the right circumstances. the right circumstances being friendly club members. i've just got a funky old single shot 12 guage, but that could change...

My aimed shooting is all at 25yds.

7 yards is pointlessly easy. Good only for ranges where I draw. A speed drill. Or un-aimed point shooting.

5 is handy for shooting from the retention position. We have an extra low bench at a few spots. I'm guessing for kids or wheelchairs. I've gotten away with hip shooting there. Which is mostly just to get reused to muzzle blast on/under my face, to prevent flinching.

I would ask if I could put portable target stands closer than the 25 meters.

25 meters is the standard for most International Bullseye competition.
Ever try to nail five silhouettes in four seconds at 25 meters from 45 degrees?

My club's pistol range is 25 yards max, but you're free to put the target stands as close to the firing line as you want. It would make sense that it's something like that.

A vast majority of handgun shooters are not into Bullseye shooting at 25 & 50 yards. The rather Spartan handgun range on my property is set up for 3-7 & 10 Yds. We shoot humanoid targets not circular target rings. My Bullseye competition days are long over. My EDC is a S&W Shield 9X19mm not a 1911 series pistol set up for target shooting endeavors.

Perhaps the range was not properly demonstrated or explained to you. I have never seen or heard of a range which didn't have pistol target setups closer than 25 yards.

well, as it turns out, i found another range close enough to me that does things right, is run by friendly, welcoming people, and i like just fine. i can shoot at any distance i want up to 25 yards. plenty enough for me.

I do most of my pistol shooting at 25 and 50 yards. I do understand that many shooters want to have their targets closer than that.
Here is the problem with that. The Game Commission range that i shoot at has target frames at 25/yards. Shooter who want to be closer walk up to the targets. Ok. While they are up there, I cannot shoot. When I am shooting, they cannot shoot,….at least not at any distance closer than where I am standing.
We have to share the range…..not ideal but it works for the most part.

The club local to me all kinds of stupid "do it my way" rules. Using a concealed holster @ the defensive pistol range is prohibited. I wont pay for that kind of ignorance.

We set up the 6" plate rack at about 20 yards and the 2/3 torso target at 50 for pistol. when I'm competing with my friend. We used to set up closer but as we got better we move it farther back to keep challenging ourselves.

Steel targets that move or swing when hit are a blast at 25yards. Wish more ranges had them.

Same instant feedback as a Shoot N See target, but free, and no pasting.

When I was a resident of Western Pennsylvania I belonged to (3) shooting associations. All (3) had tradition handgun ranges of 25 & 50 Yard. Seldom or never did I see the 50 Yard line in use. At one of those shooting associations I had influence and established a 7 Yard line which quickly became the most utilized distance.

That sounds like a classic "old-school vs. new-school" situation. Pistol ranges used to be more target-oriented rather than defense-oriented. Now that's changing.

Depends.. ONLY 25m shooting or is it UP TO 25m. If its only, then I'd say no... sometimes you need to practice closer than that.. either to help train beginners, or starting to sight a new pistol.. lots of reasons where less than 25m is necessary

The gun club I belong to does not allow bullet impact closer than 25 yards to avoid ricochet.
(I suspect the insurance company dictated that.)
Targets can be set up closer than 25 yards as long as the bullets hit the ground at 25 yards or greater.

Formal pistol matches are at 25 yards.

Not seeing either the regulations nor the range itself:
According to the 'official' measurements, 25 meters is 27.34 yards. That isn't much of a difference. (Measuring it by paces, it probably isn't significant.)
If one can hit at 25 meters, one's ability to hit the same size target at shorter distance is - at worst - the same. Probably better.
As mentioned prior to me, 25 meters is 'normal' for competitions.

The other restrictions, like use of holster (or not) is to my way of thinking, more problematic.

The other question is, can one shoot anywhere else at least as conveniently as the range in question? A range more suited to one's preferences but located two hours further away will likely stir some serious consideration.

Times change. There are still a few ranges set up around Bullseye Pistol, that is, 25 yard and 50 yard targets. Bullseye Pistol was a huge sport, thousands would go to the National Matches. Precision sports take time and work to get good at. That's why they are dying. Later generation's are so narcissistic that they have changed the rules to become legends in their own minds with hardly any effort. They have moved the targets within spitting distance, and think themselves great marksman with their three shot groups.

Or they are playing on video games. Heard a few claim they are good shots because of their performance in computer games, even though they have never actually fired a gun.
