I have an older model Browning BBR 270 Win with the original 22" barrel. The stock has developed a slight warp so I am thinking of changing the lite weight barrel to a longer, heavier barrel and reloading for range and some hunting. My question is would the 270 benefit from a barrel longer than 24" on the range and maybe a #7 or #8 target barrel.

Wow, I'm a 24" barrel fan, but you might reconsider the really heavy weight. If you are going to carry the rifle further that the truck to the range table, you won't like a 13# rifle.

I personally really like a 24 or 26 inch bbl, for the 270 or 30.06. but I would like a sporter, or heavy sporter weight , than a varmint or heavy varmint contour.
?Especially if you hump around in the woods.

I can handle the extra weight with no problem. Just never had any experience with a 26", heavy barreled 270 win. I think it's worth a try.

It seems the trend is to short barreled, lite weight rifles. Has anyone tried a 270 win over 24"? Was there any benefit? Has anyone tried a heavier target barrel with this caliber?

I am a fan of 24" -26" barrels for the 270. I had a 26" barrel (T/C Encore) and a 24" barrel (Rem 700) and the velocity gain of the 26" was around 50fps-75fps using Speer 130gr bullets over a relatively stout load of H4831SC.

A heavier profile is not going to help accuracy over a small number of shots; it may help keep the barrel from heating up as fast and shifting POI if you tend to shoot long strings. For most field work, one or two quick shots won't heat up a sporter barrel enough to notice a change in POI. If you're pounding out a ten-shot string at the range, then it may help.
