I loaded my first 270 load in 1965. Surplus H-4831 and 130 gr Hornady pointed soft point. Actually my favorite bullet is the old Winchester Silvertip. I’ve got a several lifetimes supply of them as well as a few pounds of that last 50# batch of H-4831 I bought in January of ‘73. I found IMR 7828 to be very good in my ‘51 vintage Model 70 too. Not quit as fast as H-4831 but just a tad better groups. Old model 70s weren’t known for their benchrest accuracy, but 1” to 1-1/2” groups are pretty normal for mine. Haven’t been hunting in years but it’s never let me down either. About 10 years ago I was going on an elk hunt and loaded some 130 Silvertips in the 270 and as a backup 180 gr Silvertips in my Winchester Stainless Classic 300 Win mag. Both were right around 1” groups of 5 shots. Sadly we had a serious medical situation with a S-in-law a few days before the hunt and didn’t get to find out how well they would perform on elk.
I don’t recall the exact powder charge but it’s in the neighborhood of 50 gr of H-4831 with the 130 gr bullets running just a tad over 3,000 fps.
I wouldn’t change a thing, if I thought I needed a heavier bullet I’d take one of my 30 or 35 caliber guns. 140s are probably OK but I never saw any reason to change from the 130s for pretty big white tails.
