About to start loading some hunting ammo for a buddy and teaching him to relaod. I have a lot of different powders that will work (they are in the right burn rate) but I have never loaded or had a 270. I think he shoots 140g most of the time but I have sveral bullet weight to chose from. Any pet loads out there?

After years of being disappointed with IMR 4831, I switched to IMR 4350. Finally got an accurate load with 140 gr. Speer Grand Slams.

My favorite load for the 270 was 130gr Speer HotCor over 54gr of IMR-4350. My old Ruger 77 took 22 whitetails, 2 mulies, 2 pronghorns and a bobcat. There was a whitetail and 2 mulies that were were taken between 375 and 425 yards. I think the pronghorns got hit with the old 130gr Nosler Solid Base though.

I load the same bullet for a friend but use R-19. His Savage likes it.

Others to consider are Alliant Power Pro 4000-MR and Ramshot Hunter. I got decent results with the 4000-MR and 130 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and intend to try Ramshot Hunter as well. These days, you have to grab whatever you can find and the 4350’s and 4831’s are hard to find and sell out very quickly.

I loaded my first 270 load in 1965. Surplus H-4831 and 130 gr Hornady pointed soft point. Actually my favorite bullet is the old Winchester Silvertip. I’ve got a several lifetimes supply of them as well as a few pounds of that last 50# batch of H-4831 I bought in January of ‘73. I found IMR 7828 to be very good in my ‘51 vintage Model 70 too. Not quit as fast as H-4831 but just a tad better groups. Old model 70s weren’t known for their benchrest accuracy, but 1” to 1-1/2” groups are pretty normal for mine. Haven’t been hunting in years but it’s never let me down either. About 10 years ago I was going on an elk hunt and loaded some 130 Silvertips in the 270 and as a backup 180 gr Silvertips in my Winchester Stainless Classic 300 Win mag. Both were right around 1” groups of 5 shots. Sadly we had a serious medical situation with a S-in-law a few days before the hunt and didn’t get to find out how well they would perform on elk.
I don’t recall the exact powder charge but it’s in the neighborhood of 50 gr of H-4831 with the 130 gr bullets running just a tad over 3,000 fps.
I wouldn’t change a thing, if I thought I needed a heavier bullet I’d take one of my 30 or 35 caliber guns. 140s are probably OK but I never saw any reason to change from the 130s for pretty big white tails.

The above mentioned 54.0gr of IMR4350 with a 130gr bullet is an old standard. 55.0gr of H4350 with a 130gr bullet is a factory duplication load.

My load for a 140gr bullet is 58.0gr of RL22. Sierra or Hornady bullet.
150gr is 56.5gr. My choice for elk.

My current load for a 130 is 64.0gr of MagPro. Gets 3,200fps from my MkX, 3,150 from a 22” M700. Not the most accurate but good. Not maximum.

I've had three 270's (3 different manufacturers) shoot 130gr Sierra GameKings over max and near max charges of H4831/H4831sc lights out!

The 4831's are quite popular for the 270 Win.

54gr. IMR 4350 here as well. It works under a 130gr. Speer HotCor or a 130gr Sierra GK (Rem 700 ADL composite stock with 4X M8 Leupold). Good to know I'm in good company.
