H&R Still makes the Pardner in 28 ga. In a couple different models. They are great little shotguns.Brenneke has announced that they will be marketing 28 ga slugs in the US by the end of the yr.

I would go with the 20 just for ammo cost alone. The 410 will do the job and is cheaper to shot than a 28 anyday of the week. It seems like the Sweet 16 is making a comeback I saw ammo for the 16 is now at Academy at a decent price.

Well, I ended up getting a NEF 410 gauge yesterday on my way home. It was at a local pawn shop for $70 and is like new.
I already had a 20 gauge in the same gun but it has too much sentimental value for me to keep it in the barn.
My wife will be shooting this too, if need be so that helped me tip the scales to the 410. She's tiny.
Here is a pic, the gun on top is the 20 gauge I bought when I was a kid. The bottom is the 410 I picked up last night.

And by the way, 410 gauge ammo is not cheap.

My first shotgun was a single shot 12 ga. I've always liked the nef's I may try to collect some in the near future. It's probably the cheapest way to shoot several different guages and calibers.

they also still have the JC Higgins single in 16 gauge for $60, it is in much worse shape aesthetically but the action is tight and the bore is great. I am very tempted...
<I just need a little encouragement>

Only downsides to the 16 gauge is that shells are harder to find and expensive and the recoil is pretty stiff from these light guns. If you already bought the .410 for your wife to use then why not get the 16 for yourself, too?

Single shots are cool, and you could start a collection.

i would go with an H&R 20 or an old sears or monky wards off brand single shot. i really wouldnt go 28 maybe 410 if you found one. my dad has an old sears 'ranger' brand bolt 410 its a good shotgun made by savage stevens. most of the old private label department and auto store cross brand guns were made by quality makers, maybe the finish and wood was a bit cheaper but thats it.

i lucked into about 50+ boxes of 20 ga federal hi brass game-shok in 4,6 and7.5 one nite at walmart at $1 a box. a few 12 and 16 ga as well. the cheap bastage in me just would not let it sit and i would regret it later. i bought all they had. same stuff at wallys now is $7+ a box. even their 20 and 12ga 100 rd 'value' pack is 23.99$

this caused me to eventually buy a 20 ga shotgun just to shoot it ! now my 870 youth with short stock and 22 inch barrel is my favorite for upland game. swings up so fast. and light recoil. as soon as i get the money i will acquire a nice superposed or possibly LC or Parker SxS in 20.. win 21 just out of my $$ range.

my barn gun is my great, great, grandpas damascus Parker double in 12 ga. he was too cheap ( he came from Scotland) to shoot it much so he would rattle the barn door with the barrel and the dings in the damasacus prove it. but its been in the family 5 generations so its not going anywhere. he was a chicken farmer in Hollister CA late 1890s-19-teens. at least he had good taste in guns

Barn gun-28ga.

I know of 28ga Savage single shot at local pawn shop. $199.very good shape. If interested, post contact info.Where in N.C.Have place in WNC.Could possibly deliver.

The gun will fire safely and be just fine. Problem is, it's a 16 ga. Four boxes of shells will cost what the gun is worth, if you can find them!

Try Walmart, i just bought several boxes of 16ga. Rem. game/field loads for $5.95 per box, in NYS, and i don't live in NYS. I sometimes get the same 16ga. ammo at Dicks Sporting goods for $5.99 per box in the state i live.

I never have a problem finding 16ga. ammo, i just buy the deals as i see them...
