When I first got on the job with an agency in NYC in 1969, we carried S&W Mdl 10, and Model 36. They both went for about the same, $69 discounted new. We could also carry Colt, I was dying for a Diamondback, but couldn't afford it.
We qualified once a year, 100 rounds. Most of my associates never fired another round outside of qualification. Like has been mentioned, holster wear, but like new inside. When they cleaned them.
When we transitioned to Glocks, we couldn't give the revolvers away, nobody wanted them. We were begging people to buy them for $25, $35, $50, and had a hard time making sales. Many other dept's. had transitioned before us, so no other officers wanted them. Very limited private market in NYC. Finally sold mine to a probation officer, they were still limited to revolvers at the time.
Funny to see the prices now on the stuff we couldn't get rid of, like $500 pinned barrel Mdl. 36's. For what I got rid of mine for, I probably should have kept it. And bought and saved everyone else's.
