I bought a 4" M10-14 from SOSS last year when they were just $209.

Shipped fast, the gun that arrived was essentially new. Great buy.

They are usually $199, and then S&W will refinish it for somewhere around $320. I believe that use to be the game.

I wouldn't pay over $200 OTD for a model 10 used by the police that was shot to death.

Howdy

Most police trade ins are not shot to death. Many cops only shoot their guns once or twice a year to qualify. Most police trade ins are in very good shape mechanically, although they may show a fair amount of holster wear from being carried day in and day out.

I picked up this Model 10-6 about 10 years ago for $125. I have always assumed it was a police trade in because of the number 54 stamped on the frame. Always looked like a department armorer's inventory stamp. Best deal I ever made on a used gun. A little bit of holster wear, but it was still mechanically perfect.

Good luck finding a Model 10 for $200 these days, prices have risen considerably. Most I see are going for $400, $500, or even more.

I never let a little bit of honest holster wear keep my from buying a gun if I think it is mechanically sound. A Model 10 will last a lifetime, as long as it has not been seriously abused. Holster wear is not abuse.

They look kinda beat up, but FYI:

I have no personal experience with this vendor.

I got in on the police trade in S&W M64s that this vendor carried the other year and the transaction was fast, great communication on the phone
and e-mail follow up with all info concerning the sale and the revolvers were in better shape than I expected. Two of the revolvers have department
numbers stamped on them, I think they add cool factor to the guns but if that's not your idea of cool you may want to ask the salesman if they can send you one without the extra numbers...

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from then again.

I only have 3 already. A Ni 4" police trade in (in my daughter's possession). BTW she can shoot the fire out of it! Don't mess with her!

Then I have a blue 5" and a 6". Love the 10's!

I have my first S&W revolver I ever bought in my 62 years on this planet. It is a 10-5 and has a little holster wear on the muzzle and cylinder but nowhere can I find any other stampings to indicate it was ever a police dept gun. $260.00 at an online auction site + $25.00 shipping. I am happy with it.

I picked up a police trade 10-6 4" heavy barrel a couple years ago for $159. Someone had at one time given it a quick buff and dunk in a tank of hot blue. They didn't even take it apart, the hammer and trigger were blued. They sanded and revarnished the target walnut grips with a shiny varnish. Then it got carried a lot more.
It's no beauty queen. But it hits what I point it at every time. It's my woods gun. Don't care if it gets wet or muddy, don't care if it gets banged on rocks. I've added a target trigger and hammer and a set of Pachmayrs.

For $300 it seems a bit pricey BUT where are you going to find a revolver with qualities similar to a S&W 10-6 (Pre-lock, hammer mounted firing pin, no MIM parts, pinned barrel...) for anything like that price? If I weren't well supplied with K-frames already I'd be interested, because when they are gone, that's all there are. Not like there's millions of them waiting to be traded in anymore.

back about 10 years ago Mich. prisson system went to sigs and all there 15s, 10s, and 64s went up for sale. Local dealer was getting them in every day. I bought 3 15s, 1 10 and 2 65s. All for 150 bucks a pop and could pick out the nicer ones. Like a dummy i gave all but one 15 away as gifts to friends. I wish i had bought about 10 more as today i sure could have made some money off of them. That 15 i kept has digested thousands of rounds and is no worse for wear so I doubt if the few the guard shot amounted to anything. If i had to rate my guns on a fun vs cost ratio that 15 would be at the top of the heap.

Actually the ones sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com have on their website don't look bad at all. Not a great price but like everything else that's vintage S&W these days it's to be expected.

I bought a 80s vintage Model 10 a few years ago for $200 OTD. A LGS had bought out a security company's handguns. There were Smiths, Charters and Taurus revolvers. I got a 4" pencil barrel, square grip that looked like it was carried always, shot never. Put some new Magna grips on it and it's one of my favorite handguns to shoot.

I know we'd all like to pay $ 100 for surplus Model 10s, but those days are over. I paid $234 otd for my last 10 2 years ago, and that was the cheapest I had seen after looking all around. They might pop up now and then on Gunbroker or your local pawn shop, but don't expect crates of them for less than $250 each.

Similarly, I paid $245 for a trade-in Model 10 a couple of years ago. I would judge it 85-90 percent, to my inexpert eye. I found no need to do anything to it other than to clean it up and oil it down... :)

.

When I first got on the job with an agency in NYC in 1969, we carried S&W Mdl 10, and Model 36. They both went for about the same, $69 discounted new. We could also carry Colt, I was dying for a Diamondback, but couldn't afford it.

We qualified once a year, 100 rounds. Most of my associates never fired another round outside of qualification. Like has been mentioned, holster wear, but like new inside. When they cleaned them. :uhoh:

When we transitioned to Glocks, we couldn't give the revolvers away, nobody wanted them. We were begging people to buy them for $25, $35, $50, and had a hard time making sales. Many other dept's. had transitioned before us, so no other officers wanted them. Very limited private market in NYC. Finally sold mine to a probation officer, they were still limited to revolvers at the time.

Funny to see the prices now on the stuff we couldn't get rid of, like $500 pinned barrel Mdl. 36's. For what I got rid of mine for, I probably should have kept it. And bought and saved everyone else's. :D
