Someone must make a metal rail that has standard Weaver/Picatinny/1913 railing on top, and has a 3/8" dovetail/trapezoid protrusion on the bottom? About 2-3" long and retails for under $20?

Essentially a poor man's scout/reddot setup on factory dovetailed barrels. Surely it's been done, right? I don't see one anywhere. ...and yes, I did try google.

I know its not the most secure system, but for a reddot in a scout location for cheap, I'd like to do it.....and I'd like to do it for less than the cost of having a smith drill and tap my Santa Fe Model of 1944 SMLE.

Thanks for your help, Dd

What I'm thinking of dovetails with a rear-sight 3/8" dovetail cut in a barrel, like the factory rear-sight of a 10/22, not a 3/8" scope rail.

Something like this:

(Scale is a bit off from 1913 ladder to dovetail on bottom; but you can see the basic idea here...)
Anything like this out there?

I've seen some with a nut that fits in the barrel dovetail and then a screw anchors it down but I've never seen one machined like your diagram.....good idea if you can get it to sit straight.

I'm envisioning putting something like that on say a ruger 10/22 and thinking that the taper of the barrel would cause that thing to sit funny. Might work on an untapered barrel though. However if you put a scope on it I'd be concerned about side to side rotation. Up and down seesaw motion might be controlled by a set screw....

Thanks for the replies. Those JP products look really close to what i'd like, but i couldn't cross reference any of those pistol rear-sights to be 3/8" dovetails...close, but no cigar. Please correct me if i missed one that would fit.

I guess my imagination has moved ahead of the market for once....rare, with all the useless gun add-on doodads out there! ...that, or it's been tried and discarded.

I was going to modify a 10/22 scope rail i have, by screwing it to a little 3/8 trapezoid, but realized that it's aluminum, and barrel heat / expansion and contraction between that and the steel barrel would loosen up any connection pretty quick.

Back to the drawing boards.
