new story. not too many details yet. Al Sharpton sure did get involved quickly.

NEW YORK - Police shot three young men who had just left a bachelor party at a strip club early Saturday, killing one man on the day of his wedding, according to police and witnesses. One of the survivors was in critical condition.

The shooting happened just after 4 a.m. near Club Kalua in Queens, said Officer Kathleen Price. She said there were no reports that any officers were wounded.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting. As many as eight officers may have been involved, said Sgt. Mike Wysokowski, another department spokesman.

"All I know, they was celebrating," said Denise Ford, who said her son was one of the survivors. She said the man who died was the groom. "The guy was getting married today."

Relatives said the dead man was Sean Bell, 23.

Robert Porter, who identified himself as Bell's first cousin, said he was supposed to be a DJ at the wedding.

"I still don't want to believe it, a beautiful day like this, and he was going to have a beautiful wedding, he was going to live forever with his wife and children. And this happened," Porter said.

The Rev.
Al Sharpton said family members told him that there were no guns in the young mens' car and "there was no reason for the police to shoot."

"On the face of it, it seems to me to be certainly something that causes extreme alarm and must be thoroughly investigated," said Sharpton, who said he was called by a relative of the man who died.

Abraham Kamara, 38, who lives a few blocks from the scene of the shooting, said he was getting ready for work when he heard gunfire.

"First it was like four shots," he said. "And then it was like pop-pop-pop like 12 times."

Roy Brown, who said he works as a photographer at the club, said sirens sounded not long after the three men left the club.

"They weren't rowdy or nothing like that," said Brown, 57.

A message seeking comment was left at one phone listing for the club; another phone was not answered.

One of the wounded men was in critical condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital and the other was listed as stable.

The three men ranged in age from 23 to 31 years old.

As you note, not many details yet. Not much to discuss.
Well, we could launch into another anti-cop bashfest as some of our membership is given to do. :uhoh: But then that would be too predictable and spoil all the "fun".

I want to see more on this, since all I have seen is the same article reiterated across many news sites and discussion forums.

Freaking shame about the groom being killed on his wedding day. :(

If the "Rev" Al Sharpton is involved you can bet the BS is going to get very deep ,very fast !!!

Nothing that I could find on the NY Post website. The Times had just the same information. I'm sure we'll hear more soon.

There's way too little information to make even a snap decision on this shoot. At the same time, the names Diallo and Dorismond come immediately to mind.

I'm not taking anybody's story at face value on this one, most especially Sharpton's, who's not just a liar, but an ADJUDICATED liar.

Like others, I'd like to see further details. So let's please, please, refrain from LEO bashing and leftist bashing.

Many facts not yet in evidence need to come in before anyone starts slinging blame around.

(New York - WABC, Novemeber 25, 2006) - Three people shot by police outside of a nightclub in Queens early this morning.
Eyewitness News reporter Patricia Wu has the latest details in Jamaica.

The shooting happened just around at 4:20 a.m. this morning near Club Kalua, so there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

Eyewitness News learned that three men were leaving a gentlemen's club around the corner. When they reached intersection of 94th Avenue and Liverpool Street, they crashed into a van believed to be unmarked police car and that is when gunfire erupted.

The shooting happened on Liverpool Street near 94th Avenue where all the investigators are still standing.

One person was shot in the head. He is likely to die. Two other people were also hit. Their conditions are not yet known.

Here is how one bystander described what happened.

"What I heard was the van crash into the car, two police officers got out of the van and fired into the car," the bystander said. "20 to 30 shots for what I heard."

Eyewitness News spoke to a photographer who was working at that club. He says that there was bachelor party going on there for a groom to be married today. The groom was one of those three victims that were hit.

It was not clear what sparked the shooting.

Eyewitness News will be following the story.

Is that a new law or something? We can start shooting each other when we get into car accidents?:barf: :barf: :barf:

I'm really confused here. Since guns are illegal in NYC, then why on earth would the po-lice need to shoot anyone  and not simply be out there directing traffic? In fact, since they're illegal, why should the police need the evil, awful things in the first place?

This is not looking good for the NYPD.
 Why?

There is almost no information here. Could it be bad for the NYPD? Sure. Could it be perfectly justified? Sure.

No way to tell.

Mike

Being as the NYPD has not come out and blamed the shootees for what happened, it seems likely they are trying to come up with some kind of plausible story to explain away what happened. It should be interesting to see what they can come up with if the few facts that are stated in the reports turn out to be true.

Two predictions regarding this.

1. We will never know all of the facts regarding this matter.

2. This thread and others like it will be locked by the mods just like
all threads discussing the incident in Atlanta.

Police Kill Bridegroom and Wound 2 Friends After Bachelor Party in Queens
By ROBERT D. McFADDEN
Published: November 26, 2006

Hours before he was to be married, a man leaving his bachelor party at a strip club in Queens that was under police surveillance was shot and killed and two of his friends were wounded, one critically, in a hail of police bullets fired into their car early yesterday, witnesses and the police said.

Many circumstances of the shootings were not immediately clarified, but relatives of the slain man, Sean Bell, 23, and community leaders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, demanded an investigation into what some called an overreaction by officers that left a man dead on his wedding day.

Witnesses told of chaos, screams and gunfire near Club Kalua at 143-08 94th Avenue in Jamaica just after 4 a.m. as the victims walked out, got into their car, a silver Nissan Altima, drove about a block and struck an unmarked police minivan bearing plainclothes officers.

The car then backed up, nearly hitting an undercover officer, and finally shot forward, slamming again into the police minivan.

The police response, witnesses said, was a fusillade of bullets by five officers that riddled the victims’ car, ripped into other cars and slammed through the window of an apartment near the shooting at Liverpool Street and 95th Avenue. It was unclear how many shots were fired. One witness estimated at least 30.

Shell casings littered the street; an investigator had marked one of them “45.”

Mr. Bell, who was to have been wed at 5 p.m. yesterday to Nicole Paultre, the mother of his two small daughters, was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The two wounded men, Joseph Guzman, 21, and Trent Benefield, 23, were taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where Mr. Guzman was listed in critical condition and Mr. Benefield in stable condition.

Relatives of Mr. Guzman and Mr. Benefield said that both men had been arrested, that Mr. Guzman had been shot 17 times, that Mr. Benefield had been handcuffed at the scene and that both men had been handcuffed to their hospital beds.

The police declined to say whether any charges had been lodged, and gave few details about what happened, calling it a matter under investigation. A spokesman, however, acknowledged that five officers had fired their weapons and that no guns had been found in the victims’ car, which was being examined by the authorities.

“This is a shocking case,” Mr. Sharpton, a civil rights leader who has often protested police actions in high profile and racially charged cases, said at an afternoon news conference outside Mary Immaculate Hospital, his second of the day.

He was flanked by relatives and friends of the victims, mostly somber and some sobbing.

Ms. Paultre and Mr. Bell, who lived together and had been sweethearts since high school, had two small daughters.

“Today she’s planning for his funeral rather than his wedding,” Mr. Sharpton said.

Cara Buckley, Roja Heydarpour and Daryl Kahn contributed reporting.

Among others stations, i get WABC from NYC on my local cable. They just did an "update" here with the local 1800 news broadcast, with nada to add to what we already knew. I've lived in this area for a couple of decades and the normal approach with this type of incident is for NYPD and the mayor to try to get waaay out ahead of these things with the media. After 14+ hours since this incident took place, i would think NYPD & Mr. Bloomberg would be falling all over themselves with explanations & justifications in front of the cameras. ( or maybe they just need more time to manufacture one? ) This smells bad.

Just last night I had a nightmare about being home

(home being NYC)
An old friend of mine gave me the "it's a wallet not a gun" rigamarole
a few years ago, these people honestly do not know that guns like
my little black .25 even exist.
When I showed him how I can hide my .25 behind my
small wallet he was shocked.

He now has a son and they are learning how to shoot together :)

people can change if they have an open mind.

that fact that so little is known even this long after is suspicious to me. I hope that the truth comes out and justice can be had. I would hope that our police would be examples to us by being truthful in all their business.

We don't know for sure, but: Drunk driving? Slam into a police car(s) numerous times?

Folks, a car is an EXTREMELY deadly weapon when wielded as such.

We still need A LOT more details before we go all willy-nilly banging away on the LEOs in question. If we do, the mods will shut this down, and we'll not be able to see the end result. I for one would like to see the full story.

When someone calls someone like Sharpton for help, that says something about both people.

I mean, she could have called someone with integrity and morals, but instead she gets Sharpton.

I guess birds of a feather fly together.....

And sometimes the apple doesn't fall from the tree.....

I would hope that all the citizens of our society would be examples to us by being truthful and having integrity in their actions, but ..............

Note the time of the morning and that the people who got out of the van were plainclothes officers. NOT in a uniform, with MAYBE a badge out for display. In the chaos, I wonder if those badges were even noticed? I wonder if the officers weapons were drawn when they exited the vehicle?

If so, what sort of things have members here talked about if confronted with people unknown wielding guns while we are in our respective cars? IIRC, its usually GET AWAY! and call the police.

This is sounding more and more like a case of mistaken identity (club patrons for assailants by the cops, cops for assailants by the club patrons) that tragically turned into a real charlie foxtrot.
We don't know for sure, but: Drunk driving?
That is nothing but conjecture Ben Shepherd, unless you've seen reports of BAC from the driver. People DO go out on the town and not drink.
