30-06 rifle/scope recommendations under $1,000

Savage rifle, any $200+ scope from Nikon, Burris, Leupold, etc.
I 'll go along with this Savage thing as they are excellent, good shooting rifles. The furnished scopes are a bit "iffy" however but the rifle topped with a Nikon choice is very hard to beat in a big game rifle.

I second the Tikka T3 Lite, fantastic rifles with great triggers, the factory accuracy is amazing and is second to none. Then I would put the Leopold scope mentioned in the first post. It will take anything in North America and the 30-06 has a wide assortment of hunting ammo readily available to match the game your chasing...

I live in the boondocks too. I've had to take my lumps when buying used firearms, but the CZ and Leuopld above are new. After making a couple of pawn shop buys of a couple of Leupold scopes I've begun to phase out my other optics. CZ has a great rep for accuracy and old world quality, the CF rifles come with factory rings. I have 5 and I love them all.

Here is the scope at Optics Planet, you'll be able to read some reviews there.

Skylerbone is correct. I contacted the seller and the scope is a Tasco 3-9x50. You'd be better off with the Winchester and your own scope choice.

The classic is a pre-64 M70 Featherweight 30-06. They are pumped up in price being collectors now.

They did not come with a recoil pad which I want on my 30-06's.

Another good old 06 is the Sears JC Higgins M51. They have an FN action and a chrome lined High Standard barrel. The safety is just so so but can be upgraded.

Shop around and handle some rifles and see what you prefer rifle wise.

I shot my favorite 30-06 today and it put it's first shot from a cold barrel on at 200 yds. The second confirming shot hit 0.9" away. :) It's a custom on a Mauser 98 with a Dakota safety.

Many are suggesting guns that are used or not supported everywhere. The OP wants a new rifle that can be serviced anywhere. Everyone has their pets and dislikes but realize that some of us need to be very self reliant.

I didn't read that the OP wanted a "new" rifle. He did say,
I'd also like a rifle that is fairly common and has parts/accessories easily available.
That's why I recommended a Remington 700. Gotta be one of the most common bolt action rifles out there. There are certainly many sources for factory and aftermarket parts for it.

If you want to save some money and get a quality set up that ou arent afraid to use or fret over:
-Ruger American .30-06 $325
-Redfield Revenge 3-9x42 or Nikon ProfStaff 3-9x40 $100-150ish

If you want to maximize your spending, the Tikka T3 Lite, Weatherby Vanguard/Howa, Rem 700 will treat you well

If you want to push that budget even more, the Win 70 and Browning are not bad options either

I endorse JeeperCreeper' s excellent advice. My only addition would be that I would want back-up open sights on a pack rifle. Indeed, I have a fairly moderate S&W I-bolt in 30-06 with Williams iron sights and a Nikon Prostaff as my inclement weather and pack rifle.

A $K budget should easily get you into a good hunting rig.

If it were me, I would probably go with either a Savage something, plenty of good options there, and then stick a Leupold 3x9x40 Hunter on it with Burris Zee rings.

If one is willing to go second-hand very nice rifle can be had for <$1000. Latest find is Winchester Model 70 ca. 1960 chambered for .300 magnum. Having good supply of Kynamco cartridges helps a whole lot. Unless once orders through mail ammo is a little harder for find than for .22lr. Ammo not available at Walmart and when encountered it's more than twice price of .300 WinMag ammo. Beautiful, man!;)
The .30-06 is inexpensive to shoot and can be found at any Walmart. That is no good.

The .30-06 I sold was built way before the current trigger problems. Buy something more than a couple years old and this won't be a problem.
More than "a couple of years". The recall included 700s built since 2006.

The way I did it was a pawnshop Remington 700ADL for $200 & a Weaver k4 for ~$150. It takes patience and looking to pull that off but I had plenty of patience and little money.

If I'd had more money and less patience, I would have bought a Model 70 & a Leupold FX-II 4x scope.

Zeke,

The J.C. Higgins M50 and M51 rifles were made for Sears by the High Standard co in CT.

I recall back in the 1950's, waiting in the car, while my late dad went into the HS plant to get two M51's for himself and my late uncle. They are 30-06's.

My dad had a tool and die shop and he made tooling for HS.

They used FN actions.

I have his rifle.

I must have misread that, Legionaire. It seems used guns are not readily available in his area. I agree with your advice on a rifle. The Remington is well know as a accurate, rugged rifle with no equal parts and service. Trigger upgrades if needed, or any other upgrade are readily available.

I stand corrected thanks!
I'm almost certain though that my nephew's J.C. was made in Belgium.

Yes ... well ... when you get to my age, time picks up speed. :)
.30-06 I sold recently was a 1994 build.

I had High Standard Deluxe made for Sears Roebuck. Only the action was made in Belgium by FN. The rest was assembled in USA.
