is listed at cabelas website for use in 30-30 apparently.
Will these Round Noses detonate in the tube mag?
These say RN for 30-30 not FN for 30-30.
Anyone used them before and can tell me for sure before I get some?
Thanks.

Remington has been using Round Nose bullets (150 -170 grain RN [Core-Lokt) for .30 WCF & .30-30 for years. Hornady's are pretty much the same bullet. No problem what so ever...Should be a good substitute for the Remington Core-Lokt.

No safer.

Remington has loaded RN Corelock 150 & 170 grain bullets in the 30-30 since dirt was invented.

Hornady is not in the business of selling bullets that are dangerous for use in thier intended application.

That exact bullet was my bread and butter when I was loading a boat load of 30/30 using WW748, and as expected and said by others; no problems and none expected. I have however always thought that Sierra flat nose looked good, and have wondered how it performs on deer when driven to nominal 30/30 type velocities.

Yeah, I remember seeing those .307" "30/30" bullets on the shelf many years ago, while the Hornady 150's were and still are .308", and their appearance seems unchanged to this day.

I can't personally comment on your DRT/DRN statement, as I have never hunted Deer with a 30/30; only that here in W. PA a lot of Deer tags get filled with 30/30's and Core-Lokt bullets, and my hunting friends seem generally satisfied with its performance at sub 100 yard ranges.

I'd be willing to bet that from 1895-1970's those old 30-30's killed a crapload of deer. My grandpa lived with one in his hand if it didn't kill deer, he didn't eat. I still see people using them to this day on every forum I watch. That old lever in their hands and a 2008 buck down looks awesome.

Yep!

If you like blood-shot meat and lots of waste, go with a EargaSplitten LoudenBoomer Mangle'm for those DRT deer!

But if you don't mind walking 20-30 yards to the dead deer, and want to "Eat right up to the hole", go with the 30-30!

I have, sitting in front of me, a box of Peters Rustless Ammunition (DuPont/Remington) Inner Belted (forerunner of Core-Lokt) 170 grain soft point bullets (RN). Anyone wish to venture a guess as to how old they are?

I have yet to see a properly hit deer leave the scene after being nailed by a .30-30 170 grain bullet. And besides. rcmodel is flat on...

I understand that Hornady is in the process of selling just the bullets to the reloading public. I'll not buy them because Remington Core-lokts and Speer Hot-Core FN 170 grain bullets are all that is needed to do the job...

30-30 in general is a poor choice for putting a deer down where it stands. NO shocking power.

Wow... I guess I need to let the three deer I've dropped with my 336C (over the years) go... all one shot kills, and they didn't go more than 25 yards... hmmm...

The 30-30 Win/.30 WCF round has probably taken more deer over the years than all other calibers combined.

That Hornady roundnose is a nice standard component well suited to the cartridge and rifle. So are the others mentioned.

As to the 30-30 comment...

:banghead:

Every deer I've ever killed has been with my Marlin 30-30, Bucks to does, does not matter, one shot one kill. I guess I am doing something wrong but I'll be dammed if I know what it is, Texas & South Carolina deer tremble at the sound of the ole Marlin racking a new shell into the chamber.

When i brought up the subject of the "Most Dangerous Gun Ever" . Ranging in age from 63 to 84 they gave there accounts of hunting with the M94 pre-64 30WCF (30-30). Of the 8 guys, 1 personally had an accidental discharge as a young hunter, cold hands was the reason given. The other 2 were in different hunting parties at the time of there seperate accidental discharge events. Luckly, no one was shot. They all agreed that a model 94 with no safety should never be given to a new hunter.

I actually wholeheartedly agree with you on the point of the halfcock "safety" being downright dangerous. Add me to the ND crowd mine was when I was 12 using my pre 64 m94 and cold gloved fingers were to blame. Any design that requires the trigger to be pulled to engage the safety mechanism is plain retarded

Giving a kid a marlin or winchester is just as bad as giving a kid a Glock

HOWEVER

this has no bearing whatsoever on 30-30's terminal performance on game

yep. i agree with that. as for drt a deer with a 30-30, it is going to depend where you hit it, and/or the bullet you use.

my wife took an 8 point, that we had to track a LONG way. i do not remember what bullet she used (unfortunatly). she also took several deer @ over 200 yards with it. i ended up calling her "annie oakley" when ever we went hunting.

i also took several deer with that gun (before i married her) never had to chase any of them very far. and yes, i did have a drt, about a 60 yard shot, that was with a winchester hollow point. there was a hole in its chest cavity big enough to put my hand in, and i did.

if you think a 30-30 is a whimp gun, VOLUNTEER TO BE SHOT BY ONE! i GUARANTEE that will change your mind!

I agree... The 30-30 is my flavor of the month at the moment.

I have some mean guns but there is something about a Lever Gun.
At the moment I have 2 x 30-30's and 1 x 375 Win.
