30-30 LEVERevolution...you gotta try it

I can't wait to try it either! I just bought a Winchester Wrangler that I'm itching to test out with the new ammo.

All this talk got me fired up, so I went out and bought a box..

I agree that the tip is more like a plyable plastic. From the ad I thought it would be spongy, but it is not. I can't wait to get out and shoot some of this stuff. I have a 16"bbl 336 and a 20"bbl 336. I do not have a crono, but I will post the accuracy with both.

Have a good one,

Matt

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding these things. They do not significantly boost the initial velocity. It is only due to the shape of the bullet that they retain more velocity down range, and thus have a flatter trajectory. So, unless you are going to put the chronograph just under the target at 200 yards, you will not notice any significant difference in velocity.

No, I understand that, I was just hoping for chrono on these 160-grainers from a 16" barrel. They seem a little faster than some other ammo generally.

The website states: "Up to 250 feet per second faster muzzle velocity than conventional lever gun loads."

I suspect that some of the Leverevolution rounds are loaded using the Hornady Light Magnum technology...

Here are a couple of comparisons that support that suspicion.

The 160gr 30-30 Leverevolution ammo is 10fps faster out of the muzzle than the lighter 150gr loading that Hornady offers--but it SHOULD be about 100fps SLOWER.

And the 200gr 35Remington Leverevolution ammo is over 200 fps faster at the muzzle than the identical bullet weight loading offered by Winchester.

The numbers for .444 Marlin and .45/70 don't seem to show the same velocity benefit though.

So in at least SOME of the calibers, you get a DOUBLE benefit if you believe the advertising numbers.

Here is Chuck Hawk's report:

http://www.chuckhawks.com/leverevolution.htm

His data showed the greatest fps advantage of Hornady at 140 out of a 20", and 75 higher out of the 24".

He states that these factory loads gave him equal to his best hand loads in terms of group size when compared to his records.

He reported no noticable difference in recoil.

hunting deer with a .223?

YOU BET- I nailed 2 deer with my Mini-14 two seasons ago. Pop, drop & flop. They were both "DRT". Shot placement is what is paramount to success. Why do you seem so surprised? The .223 is a versatile cartridge. Why do you think it could it NOT take a deer?

Just read about this in both Guns and Ammo and American Rifleman. Awesome, if I do say so myself. Of course, the inevitable question(s) is(are)

1. Will they be selling the bullets and/or powders for hand loaders?
2. Any of their competitors have a similar product in the works??

Yes, thats what the Guns and Ammo article stated. You can read it on the Hornady web page (though its not the same article I read in the print version).
