I wonder if that bullet isn't for something like .30-40 Krag or similar.

Yup. And like I posted previously, that's what I use them for. They work fine in .30-06, .30-40, and .30-30 for a T/C Contender or single-loaded in a short bolt-action, like the Savage-Stevens-Springfield 325/340 series or the Remington 788. In the Remington, seated to the cannelure and loaded to over 2100fps it is a real knocker-downer for medium-size deer at under 200 yards. I like it for putting pigs down with the T/C at close range from a comfy hammock in the Spring time. No muss, no fuss, just spread some peanut-butter popcorn and take a snooze with the T/C in-hand uncocked and wait for a piggy to come by. :p:)

Those bullets the OP had were for 30-06/300 WIN MAG dangerous game rounds IIRC. They were designed as deep penetrators before Partitions and Interloct type bullets were thought of.

They do a pretty good job at close range on tough animals like feral hogs even at lower velocities. They don't need to expand, they need to get past the tough shoulders and ribs and into the chest cavity. But I still recommend using them in an '06 or 30Krag where they get some steam up.

One can always put one cartridge in the chamber and one cartridge in the magazine tube. Then the primer ignition issue is a mute point.
In my hunting experience, I always levered the mag round into the chamber for a quick follow up shot
But to this day I never fired it nor did I need the balance of the rounds in the mag tube. But then I only still hunt and never in front of dogs.
