Ok, so we all know the media often makes these comments out of either ignorance or for some political reason, but now I hear this crap on Animal Planet. On one of my favorite television shows, Animal Cops (Philadelphia), none the less.

On episode 8 that originally aired on 1/26/09, I had to listen to this mindless crap when they described a bolt action rifle chambered in .30-30 Winchester discovered as a "cop-killer rifle" after pointing out it can punch through a vest. My wife rolled her eyes as I pointed out how stupid that comment was and I know I should be used to it by know, but it still irks me something fierce.

I suppose this tread is a rant.... I'm going to email Animal Planet concerning the comment, though I know it'll be ignored.

A bolt action .30-30 is somewhat rare, and it is FAR from an ideal "cop killer" rifle, and to even suggest that it is the primary purpose of the rifle is the worst kind of ignorance.

At least they didn't find any "cop killer" bombs. You know:

I mean - I'm sure a thermonuclear warhead would penetrate body armor.

what bolt guns are chambered in .30/30 ?

I had a Remington something-or-other (can't remember the model) when I was 12.

No more and no less a "cop killer rifle" than an AR-15 or a Remington M700.

Yes, a .30-30 will shoot through NIJ Level II or IIIA body armor like it's Saran Wrap. But so will all other centerfire rifles. Yes, .30-30's have been used to murder police officers, but rifles of any type are rarely used to do so.

Bolt .30-30s

The Savage 340 comes to mind.

I don't actually know of any others.

Actually, if I were a betting man, I'd say they found a bolt gun in .30-06 or .308, given that the Savage hasn't been made for years and would be a really uncommon find.

Many years ago had a Winchester model 54 in 30-30. Savage also chambered a bolt action in it the 340 I think. Remington also made the model 788 in 30-30 also.

savage winchester and remingtona ll made them

oh man i better hide my lever action cop killer.......

the .30-30 will punch thru 1/4 inch steel like paper but so will most others

the .30-30 was designed over 100 years ago (1895 i think it was after the model 94 winchester was introduced) if you can find a kevlar vest from the 19th century ill buy it if its got jesse james sig on it then im going to sell my bridge to pay for it

its stupid id bet the 7.62x54R will punch thru 1/2 inch or atleast bed the heck out of it that cartridge was designed in like 1891 i think

yeah they will kill officers, heck so will a .22lr if you hit them in the right place without the vest

most bullets were designed to kill something be it animals or people and last time i checked cops are just regular people

My brother Dave has a bolt-action .30-30, damned if I know what make it is though. Been 30 years since I've seen it.

My Uncle still hunts with a Savage .30-30 bolt gun. It's ugly but it works.

Cop killer? Someone needs to remind the dog catcher he's not on DALLAS SWAT.

Nobody addressed the issue of the vest.

A 30-30 can punch through a vest, can't it? As can most rifle cartridges?

But re the OP's news article, even cotton can kill a cop. If you tie him up, tape his mouth, then shove cotton up his nose. That would be cop killer cotton.

Or a rabbit. A rabbit can kill a cop. You take a rabbit. Stick it in the freezer for about a week. Then put it in a tube sock. Then you beat the cop to death. That's a cop killer rabbit.

the media is our worst enemy. and they exploit the first amendment to death constantly to let us know there is nothing anybody can do about it.

Teddy Kennedy called it a 'cop killer' and cited the 30-30 and it's generic deer hunting ammo as 'armor piercing' (well, it can punch through a vest) and he desired for it to be banned.

Another rifle caliber, the 30.30 caliber, was responsible for penetrating three officers' armor and killing them in 1993, 1996, and 2002. This ammunition is also capable of puncturing light-armored vehicles, ballistic or armored glass, armored limousines, even a 600-pound safe with 600 pounds of safe armor plating.

It is outrageous and unconscionable that such ammunition continues to be sold in the United States of America. Armor-piercing ammunition for rifles and assault weapons is virtually unregulated in the United States. A Federal license is not required to sell such ammunition unless firearms are sold as well. Anyone over the age of 18 may purchase this ammunition without a background check. There is no Federal minimum age of possession. Purchases may be made over the counter, by mail order, by fax, by Internet, and there is

right hand column, about 2/3rds the way down

Well I guess that's where they got the quote from. It's "unconscionable" that an elected official in our country would be so ignorant as to say those words on the floor of the senate.

The Springfield 840 and the Savage 340 were both the same rifle. They were made up to 1983 I believe. Remington built a bolt .30-30 as well (the 788). There was also the winchester model 54 in .30-30, but it is a bit hard to find. The savage you can get on gunbroker right now...http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=132006496

Actually, you can get all three on gunbroker right now. I just looked.

The 30-30 is the most annoying cartridge in the world to me. People love this round and honestly and I'm absolutely tired of hearing about it. The only time I would even think of getting a 30-30 is if I was going Lever and even then it would a 45 long colt. Anyways, "Cop Killer" haha please. They have a lot more rounds to worry about than the old fashioned 30-30.

Commercial "Do-Nuts" should be identified in 'Line Ups' and elsewhere, a lot more often for their true role as Cop Killers...those hydrogenated Oils, other transfats, mold-inhibitors, and high Sugar...ARE 'deadly'...and I wish more reporters and alphabet-agencies' press conferenes, would do the Camera Lens 'Zoom' on to a self-conscious, sitting-on-a-doily 'Do-Nut' when wanting to point-the-finger...

Trying to assign the term to a "30-30"...is...ridiculous...

Whaaaaa?!?!???!!!??!!!????!!!!
There are some cartridges I have no interest in but .. ... "annoying"??? Come on!!!
It's probably taken more deer in North America than any other cartridge.
So it isn't some magic cartridge any longer. Wooopdeeedo.

Well, if ted kennedy said it then it must be true. By the way, what is the statute of limitations on drowning your date? Yet another "elite" who is above the rule of law.

Make sure and maintain your satellite/cableTV subscriptions and send in your check on time!
Animal Planet can't produce this garbage without it!
