30-30 Sierra 125 gr. pro hunter

I'm thinking of loading some for deer this fall. I have looked at my load books and there is no data for this bullet.

I want to push the bullet pretty fast while keeping the Marlin 336 in one piece. My 336 was made in the 1960's and is in good shape.

Does anyone have any input as to load data they would like to share?

You need another load manual!
Lyman #49 has a section on that bullet in the 30-30.

I have loaded that bullet with 36.0 grains of H-4895 for about 30 years.
It will shoot very close to 1 MOA with my open sight Win 94 carbine.

It is over current SAAMI spec so use caution when working up to it in your rifle.

BTW: Lyman #49 lists 36.0 of RX15 (compressed load) as the most accurate load in their testing.

Hodgdon has data for 130s on their site. That should get you close for a few more loads. Just remember that the 30/30 isn't a hot rod. If you want faster, get more gun.

I have used that bullet extensively in 7.62x39 with good results on eastern deer. H4895 is the way to go in .30-30.

You do know this is a Spitzer style bullet and isn`t designed for tubular magazines. If you go with this you will need to limit yourself to one in the chamber and one in the mag effectively making the rifle a "two shot".

Both the #2020 and #2120 are listed as 125gr Pro Hunter. The #2020 is a flat-nose hollowpoint while the #2120 is the spire point. http://www.sierrabullets.com/index.cfm?section=bullets&page=rifle&brandID=3&displayAll=1
I believe the #2020 was designed specifically for the .30-30.

You'll love this bullet for deer hunting. I find the best accuracy in my 336 using unpublished data at around 2150 fps. Don't let the lack of velocity fool ya. This bullet is a deer's worst nightmare from a 30-30.

Very accurate in 336W.

I used AA2230 for it. Some loads as shown above will hit 2650fps.

The lead in the JHP seemed harder than pure lead.

Lymans 49th edition Pg 213 shows a 125 gr JHP with H335 37.5 gr @ 2626 fpm. 37600 CUP (this was the highest pressure given for this bullet weight, although not the highest pressure for this cartridge, the heavier bullets having some higher pressures. I have not tried this yet, I've been using IMR 3031, and B-LC(2).
I have a Savage 340 that I shoot pointed 125 gr bullets from; Speer TNT & Nosler Ballistic tip. It's fun.
I used to like the biggest boomer possible, but now I have backed off a bit and like 30-30, and reduced load .357. Go figure.

I think that is the bullet Federal uses for their reduced load factory round for 30-30.

I dug through all my stuff and couldn't find the AA2230 load. But confirm the above 49th book on H335. BL-C2 looks good as well. The 3031 would be hard to stuff enough powder. For high velocity in the 125 gr area, a short cut or ball powder with over 35gr charge, like R7. You can interpolate between 110gr and 130gr loads in Alliant data for official load data.

Found my loads, I did 34,35and 36grains of aa2230 and was hitting 2650fps with the 36grain load.
