Since the new Call Of Duty game World at War came out my wife has seemed to have rediscovered her interest in guns, thankfully we share the favorite.

The Springfield M1 Carbine WWII Era.

Well we were playing the other night when her grandmother who we are staying with looked at the gun in the game and said "I know that gun, when Bill [her brother] died I found that gun in his living room under the couch with a full clip in it" I didn't both trying to tell her the difference between a clip and magazine at the time but it got me interested. She pulled me into the other room and produced from the closet a fairly good condition M1 Carbine. She told me if I can keep it clean and shoot it I can have it.

Cleaning wasn't a problem, Bill was good with his guns apparently and he has only been gone under a year now. The problem I am having is shooting it, the ammo that is still in the 2 magazines that are with the gun (un-loaded now of course) has a little corrosion on it and I don't want to put that into the gun.

I don't know what is a good buy on .30 carbine ammo and more then that what brands will shoot well in that caliber. I can most likely find it someplace locally, here in town are a couple small shops, but ordering online isn't a problem either.

My question is, to those who own/have owned an M1 Carbine, what .30 Carbine ammo do you recommend?

PS. Can post pics of the gun if anyone is interested.

CMP is where I actually ended up first, good price and I am assuming good ammo, but there is a 5 month backorder.

The cheaper Remington FMJ works better in my Universal than the more expensive stuff. About $16 for 50 rounds at Wal-Mart (When they have it.) Hey, if it will work in a Universal it'll work in anything.;)

S&B .30 Carbine works great in mine. My local shop gets
it in periodically, a couple cases at a time, so it's out there
somewhere.

The ammo from the CMP (mentioned before) is probably the best deal out there. It's Aguila. Functions fine, but is DIRTY and seems to shoot a little slow (and low). You can get Wolf for $2-$3 cheaper per box, but it also seems underpowered and I (and many others) have had feeding/jamming issues.

Good deal on the rifle! Yeah, I'd backorder from CMP and buy the remington stuff from wally world until you get it. My store always seems to have it in stock and its reasonably priced.

I honestly and stupidly overlooked the local wal-mart here, mostly because they sell out of 9mm within a couple hours every shipment.

I will check them out the next time I am in.

I prefer buying the S&B, then the WWB when possible. However, since about June, there just have not been many options at all in .30carbine.
Which seems to fit into the general scarcity going on right now.
If that means anything, as with all of the other scarcities, it's just too hard to tell.

M1 Carbine

Tell us more about the carbine. What brand name is under the rear sight, serial number, whats written on barrel, what letters are in sling well, any other marks on stocks?
Does it have crossed cannon on right side and/or letters?

Dang, and you haven't even got into the innards yet! Nearly every part of a carbine has the makers mark on it.

And post some pics if you can. :)

Not that it matters, but Springfield Armory didn't make Carbines.
When I was gathering brass, long ago, I used Winchester .30 Carbine. Some Remington too. Nothing but my reloaded ammo now.
Be extra nice to grandma.

Buy whatever kind you can find now-a-days. My carbines are not picky at all. Plinkers only, never have done any serious accuracy testing on them. Try Georgia Arms, I've had good luck from everything I've ever bought from them. Others may tell you otherwise, but I've gone through thousands of rounds, in multiple calibers, without any glitch.

Definitely save the brass when you shoot up whatever ammo you get. I understand .30 Carbine is pretty easy to reload.

Honestly, I just got into reloading after years of being intimidate by the idea. Spent $30 on a Lee Hand Press, $25 on dies, and now I can reload .32 H&R for about 7c a shot, instead of 40c a shot storebought.

You might want to just consider getting a reloading kit. The Lee Hand Press and all my gear (except for the bottle of powder) fits in a toolbox about the size of a shoebox, and I can take it out, load, and put it away with no fuss.

Just another option to consider. Once you pay the initial start-up costs of the tools and brass, the loads are probably 12c or less per shot.

It was a good deal, I bought 1000 rds of Federal from The Sportsmans Guide before the frenzy. Looks like they're out of it now.

CMP offers Aguila ammunition which worked great in my carbine. I used wolf without issues too, but I wouldn't feel comfortable putting that into something like the carbine anymore.

On another note, Why don't these stories happen to me? A lot of people lucking out here. Congrats on the new rifle, carbines are really fun!

Remington Hollow point used to be the bomb as an antipersonnel/hunting load. But I heard there is a new loading by somebody just out that SOUNDS killer (pun intended).

Going to try and drop into walmart and find out what I can get there locally tomorrow, I will also post the pics once I can photograph it in the daylight.

I am pretty sure its the springfield, will check while I am taking the photos though.

I just stumbled across a shop here in NE Ohio, that has a pile of LC 69.
