I've been wanting to scope my M1a, but I've set my mind on the ACOG sighting system. As the ACOG's have such short eye reliefs and there is a lack of rail systems available for the M1A's that would bring the ACOG up close enough I've been considering alternative ideas.
There is the Troy SOPMOD chassis system available for from $750 on up to $950, then you'd have a stock wrapped over a rifle, that really doesn't appeal to me.
I've been considering the LWRC and XCR rifles because they are piston driven and also have the full top rail system that would accomodate ACOG's nicely, but I'd only consider each in 6.8SPC as the minimum caliber, but that caliber is prohibitively expensive.
So I've been considering the AR-10 type of rifles which have the A4 configuration which would nicely accomodate any short eye relief scopes. But I have always been weary of the DI type of gas systems and want M14 or AK type reliability from my rifles. I've heard of the P.O.F. piston driven .308 AR rifles but don't know much about them and how their support rates.
So what other options are there?

Trijicon makes ACOGs for .308s. They have more eye relief than the 5.56 ACOGs.

I like the POF in .308 and the DSA FALs are available with plenty of rail space. dont forget the PTR 91.

Since you said you were interested in A4 style DPMS also makes an A4 style rifle with a shorter barrel and telescoping stock. It is 100% reliable so it compares well to the M14. I certainly think it is worlds ahead of the AK.

I hear a lot about how direct impingement makes a rifle some kind of jam machine and AKs can't be stopped with a ballpeen hammer and front end loader full of dirt but 22 years of practical experience have taught me something completely different.

Smith Enterprise is making an M14 dedicated ACOG mounting platform now.
It is suppose to provide the right eye relief and height.

Now if Trijicon can get the reticles to stop popping when paired with .308 caliber rifles we might have something,,,,,,,,

Put your M1A in a LAW483 M14 MCS from TROY and use any ACOG you want :)

Take a look at a DSA STG58. It's cheaper than their SA series and just as good. It'll save you a few hundred dollars (especially if you buy directly from DSA) and you can put that money toward ammo or the ACOG itself. FALs are really easy to scope with a dustcover mount.

+1, the FAL is easy to scope. I bet it's a lot lighter than any M1a in the tacticool aftermarket stock systems that are the rage these days.

That said, I've been eyeing the RRA LAR-8.

Why must it be an ACOG?

There are much better optics and mounting solutions for the M14 out available.

The best iron sights in the world, or the worst scope mounting platform in the world, it's your decision.

Use the money you save to buy ammo and actually shoot it.;)

The best iron sights in the world, or the worst scope mounting platform in the world,

Best iron sights in the world - YES.
Worst scope mounting platform: Not so much anymore.

Nowdays mounting a scope on an M14 is like field stripping a 1911...

Sure it's more difficult than some options, but it still isn't that difficult. Even the out of spec dimensions of the cast Springfield receivers don't leave you high and dry. So we are talking "hard" here on the same level as making a grilled cheese sandwich.

The point being if you can't scope your M14, you probably wear Velcro shoes and a bib...

That just made my day! LOL. Thanks, militiaman.

Why ACOG? After much....much research, it appears to me that the ACOG combines the best features of other sighting systems into one unit and adds magnification and it's accomplished without using batteries.
I've been mulling the idea of just leaving the M1A in stock form and just wait for the XCR to become available in .308 and throw an ACOG on it.

I have tried the ACOG on an M14 and did not like the short eye relief
combined with the 7.62mm recoil. I also did not like the smallish eyepiece.

I don't see what's so wrong with an ACOG on the M1A...I'm fairly sure some of the fellas in the military have had ACOGs on their M21 for more urban-based sniper work...I could be wrong, though.

You don't know what you're missing...
I know I'm not missing an extra $300-$700 for a scope mounting solution. Not faulting you if that's the way you want to dress your M14. It's your rifle, do what you want, but for me, I prefer irons. No need for Aimpoint this and ACOG that. The M14 and M1 Garand have the best iron sights a battle rifle can offer. I can't see spending $300-$700 just to mount optics. If it were a dedicated long range gun (like out past 600 yds), then sure, I guess I can see the need for a scope. Other than that, shoot the irons. They are so much more fun.

JMO.
