Two threads on THR got me to thinking about a chamber adapter for my FR-7. Here is a link to a supplier: http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm

Since the small-ring 1916 mauser action is dicey for using 7.62x51 NATO, and I feel that i'd be plain suicidal putting .308 Win in there, I was wondering about an adaptor that would transform the rifle into something more useful/safer for the shooter. The options are:

-7.62x39
-.30 carbine
-32 Short Colt, 32 Long, 32 H&R
-32 ACP
-30 Luger

So my questions:
1. Do you think this is a good idea?
(they are removable so no value lost)

2. Which option would you go for?
Currently the gun doesn't get much exercise, so i'd be creating purpose...i don't really have one in mind. Also, I realize that these options are all lower powered, but don't know all the specs on all of them - hence, i'm asking you!

Also, my mind is made up that the FR-7 cannot handle .308win; so don't try to argue that point here.

Thanks for your input! -desidog

I think the 7.62x39 would be a good choice for the Mauser. Decent power and fairly cheap to shoot.

The adapter for the 7.62x39 is installed using locktite and can be removed with a broken shell extractor when you choose.
7.62x 39 shoot fine in a .308 barrel, as evident by the Ruger Mini-30.

Mini 30 was made to shoot 7.62x39 so it's bore is .311 diameter and not 308

Will a 308 extractor connect with the 'x39's base
Will extract in most cases but not reliable and may not eject well since it won't hold the spent shell for ejector to hit consistantly. You can buy an extractor blank and custom fit.7.62x39 will not feed well in the mag as well, mag too long and too wide. I am building a 1916 conversion to 7.62x39 now with 7.62x39 barrel, a fun project, but not worth it.

The early Mini 30 was indeed made with .308 bores for a while before they changed to .311 bored barrels. .311" 7.62x39 bullets will work just fine in a .308" bore.

I have a .308 to 30 mauser adapter from http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm The .30 mauser adapter shoots 7.62x25 without ANY problems!!! It works great since the 7.62x25 ammo and .30 mauser have very similar dimensions and the tok ammo uses .309 bullets. It is very accurate out to 100 yards and it zips out of my Ishapore enfield @ ~1850fps. You can still shoot surplus ammo in 7.62x25 for less than $.10/round:D

wnycollector, thanks for weighing in. 7.62x25Tok would be fun in the 18" barrel.

How easy is it to load the next shot? Does it require any fancy maneuvering as far as ejecting a spent casing?

In theory, you could buy several chamber adapters, load them with the tok ammo and them load the loaded adapters into your mag...they cycle through just like regular ammo:)

As far as removal of the spent tok case from the adapter, for me, it depends upon what countries surplus ammo I use. Bulgarian ammo requires me to use an old screws driver to drive each and every case out from the mouth of the adapter:( Romanian requires the screwdriver occasionally. With Wolf gold or S&B the cases just fall out everytime. Loaded with wolf JHP your FR-8 becomes a flat shooting small game/varmint rifle (~1850fps/650ft lbs).

All in all, the adapters are worth the (minimal) effort!

Sounds good. I think i'll order up two stainless 308 to 30 mauser adapters, and a can of 7.62x25 ammo.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a 7.62x25 chamber adapter for a .303 Enfield?

You would be pushing a .308 bullet down a .311-.314 barrel, depending on the actual bore size of the Enfield. Probably not conducive to much accuracy.

The head diameter of the 7.62X39 is 0.445" and the head diameter of the.308/7.62X51 is 0.473". You will indeed have extraction and ejection problems. You will also probably need to block the magazine, cut the back off the magazine follower and use a new magazine spring to get the 7.62X39 to feed reliably.

You should have mininal problems with the 0.311" bullet in the 0.308 groove diameter bore -- but in any case you can reload 7.62X39 with .308 bullets (although you may need to replace the expander on your reloading die.)

Why not just load down for the FR7? There's a bunch of reduced recoil 125 grain loads for .308 that would fit the CETME round to a "T".

I'm already doing that; but my rounds cost more than 10cents each....hopefully with the 762x25, i'll get my practice and can still drop in a 308-sized down-loaded cartridge for deer season....although a hollow-point 7,62x25 might do just fine on a deer inside 100.

..and there's my next question: slow 170gr SP vs. fast(er) 80gr HP

Respectfully, the best prices I've seen for 7.62X25 was .11/round and that was milsurp, probably corrosive, ball that didn't have shipping and hazmat included into the price.

Reloadable stuff was waay higher and still didn't include shipping and/or hazmat.

If you're loading reduced charge .308 for the FR7 you might be money ahead staying the course.
