Agreed Sam.
Range AND Wind.
Difficulty with range estimation can be resolved with an inexpensive laser range finder. Wind however is a whole different matter. There is no easy tool to judge wind with. You just have to learn how to read it through experience, and apply the proper value to your best judgment.
The hardest shot I took in the field was during a windy March day on a groundhog at just a tad over 400 yards. Winds were 15-20 mph, and I was using my long range .308 with a 110 V-Max. It took me 5 shots to judge the wind correctly, and time my shot to align with the wind value I dialed in. Unfortunately for him, he was young and not field-wise yet. A wiser one would have went back in his hole sooner.
