Agreed Sam.

Range AND Wind.

Difficulty with range estimation can be resolved with an inexpensive laser range finder. Wind however is a whole different matter. There is no easy tool to judge wind with. You just have to learn how to read it through experience, and apply the proper value to your best judgment.

The hardest shot I took in the field was during a windy March day on a groundhog at just a tad over 400 yards. Winds were 15-20 mph, and I was using my long range .308 with a 110 V-Max. It took me 5 shots to judge the wind correctly, and time my shot to align with the wind value I dialed in. Unfortunately for him, he was young and not field-wise yet. A wiser one would have went back in his hole sooner.

guys, 308 flat out sucks for shooting at 1000 yds with most loads. keep in mind with palma, that they're using 30" barrels.

but it is great for <600 yrds with almost any load.

edit: and by 'sucks', i mean 'is not competitive in any event that allows other calibers, nor practical for any hunting or tactical scenario where putting a round where you want it is more important than the challenge/fun of shooting'

Yes, if you shoot against others for score, and the rules permit other calibers, the .308 struggles.

BUT, it's economical. It's gentle to shoot. It's not going to wear a barrel out as fast as the lighter and faster stuff will. And there are a whole lot more .30 caliber bullet designs developed, mature, and consistent in their manufacturing than the other calibers. It's a lot more versatile.

But, yes, there are better rounds for punching paper or hitting steel.
