308 Semi-auto with great Accuracy

If you don't mind a heavy paper-punching bench gun, the DPMS LR-308 24" is an excellent choice and it's a half to a third of the price of the other 308 ARs.

The downside is that I would never lug it into the field. Way too heavy.

I can only offer my opinion based on the two 7.62 X 51 NATO semi-auto rifles I own. The Springfield M1A Loaded and Armalite AR-10TBNF. Both are very fine weapons which deliver MOA or better depending on ammo choice. Both are a bit under the 2K threshold.
I prefer the AR-10:
- Tripple lapped SS barrel
- Better out-of-the-box trigger group
- Easier to clean/care for
- More user-friendly recoil
- Easier to personalize and ergonomicize (New word)

I'm sure the LWRC, Larue, SCAR, Bushmaster et.al. are fine as well. I just don't own one and therefore have no comprehensive opinion to express.

Good luck, be safe.

One of my old college roommates had a Remington 742 Woodsmaster in .308. With Federal Premium 165 Sierra Gameking ammunition it would shoot 1 - 1.25 MOA for three shot groups at 100 yards. Shot way better than it was supposed to :).

Hard to clean, and must be kept clean to maintain reliability. The Remington semi-autos do shoot good groups with the right ammo, and are much cheaper than the M1As/AR-10s. I have seen them in pawn shops for around 300 bucks.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I would buy an M1A personally, in fact that will probably be my next rifle purchase, but the Caddilac of accurate .308 semis is the Les Baer. Comes with a 1/2 MOA guarantee.

Even a Saiga .308 has been well known to produce Sub-MOA. Provided the right trigger, right ammo and fully converted. Which will land you well under 1500 dollars. Please hold the negative comments until you have looked it up.

I have owned several 308 semi's. Currently I still have my origional M1A (owned since 1984) and most recently I acquired an OBR from Larue. All I can give you is my experience with the platforms I have been exposed to and shot.

M1A's are by far one of the most reliable, battle proven rifle platforms in the world. I will never get rid of my Standard. However it is trully a battle rifle and is not a precision weapon. I shot this rifle at Tannerite at 100 yards about a month ago and was hitting bottles without missing with surplus German ammo. These bottles are roughly 4" by 4". I still am able to shoot 1 1/2" groups with Federal GMM consistently at 100 yards. This is not what I would consider bolt gun accuracy.

I have owned Armalite AR10's, DPMS 308's both of which were standard models, and I was not able to get either rifle to group inside of 2" at 100 yards. The Armalite was terrible and I could not get it inside of 3" at 100. When I called them, their solution was to send it back to them and pay another 300 dollars to put a new barrel and handgaurd on. Needless to say I took a loss on that one and moved on.

The FAL is also an excellent battle rifle however again, you will not get consistent, sub MOA accuracy there.

In 2009, I bought an OBR from Larue. I really can't tell you how happy I am with this rifle. I got the rifle from the factory with the test target which showed it shooting just over .8 MOA. I cleaned the rifle when I got it, took it out to the range the week after I received it and shot 5 benchrest 5 shot groups and none of them measured greater than .5 MOA. I haven't had 1 malfunction with the rifle since I receivd it. It has digested without fail all manners of surplus and commercial ammo and never complained.

Now spending 3000.00 (prices went up after I bought mine) on a rifle is a chunk of change and if you did that on a bolt gun, you should have a gun that could place bullets in the same holes as other bullets. I have never come across a semi that can keep up with the accuracy of a bolt gun but the OBR has come the closest. Some will say the M1A Super Match will do what the OBR will and they may be right but it will do it for no less money and 3 pounds heavier.

I have not shot the LMT 308 or the Noveske 308 but both of these manufacturers are known for their quality. I have no doubt they will be in the ballpark to compete with the OBR but the threads I have read on these rifles do not show me these rifles are capable of out shooting the OBR.

Thats my two cents and you know what people say about opnions. Don't decide to spend thousands on a semi 308 until you at east check out an OBR.
