Anybody got any links to some .308 South African surplus? I ordered at AIM but they appear to be out now. Thanks...

Outdoormarksman had about forty-some battle packs about an hour or so ago. 37.95 a pack though, ouch! When did you order from AIM? Did you get a confirmation, or did you order via snail mail?

i've got a bunch of individual s. african boxes that i am selling for 4 bucks each, but i don't have any battle packs.

I couldn't access the forums at that site - registration is required and has been disabled by the administrator. Guess it's private.

The South African is the last of the halfway decent surplus .308, I think, and it'll dry up eventually (like the Portugese, the Hirtenberger, and the Australian did). Stock up while you can! It's possible other large quantities of surplus ammo will come onto the market eventually. I hope so; buying commerical .308 by the 20-round box would get expensive quickly!

Cheaper then dirt has Silver Bear .308 for $4.97 a box. They had it about dollar cheaper the other week. Couple guys at Cetme rifles forums say that is good to go except for being really dirty.

That silver bear ammo... is it loaded to .308 pressures or to 7.62 Nato standard?

Thanks folks, I DID order at the AIM website just about a week ago but never got the delivery. So I went back to check on it and discovered they wanted a copy of my DL or they wouldn't process. (Meanwhile Graf sent me ammo without a hitch) When I tried to reorder the page with the .308 was gone. I can only assume they are out. I'm going to call them this A.M. soon as they open. I'll give these other sources a try and let you all know what happened.

ranger- PM sent...

Rats they appear to have done the same to me. You would think they could at least contact us and tell us they need further information to process the order.

:cuss:

I will call later, but if I missed the boat on this they can forget further business from me

John

280Plus, I think they are totally out. I was in the same boat as you ... placed an order about week ago (Oct 25) and got my ammo but as of Nov 1 they are out. They're also out of Radway Green SS109.

I'm going to check out the SA .308 pricing at the next gunshow around here. I don't have really high hopes but the last time I went a vendor had pricing on SA .308 similar to AIM's pricing. I am not hopeful that the pricing has remained the same but we will see.

The gunshow I went to yesterday in Michigan had two different vendors selling the SA battlepacks for $40 a piece! :( They know that AIM is out so they can raise the price.

Don't complain, that's still dirt cheap ammo that I would have grabbed in a heartbeat. Don't forget the considerable extra cost of shipping from AIM. I hate when people trip over a dollar to save a dime.

Yup, ditto on that. A call or something would have been nice instead of just waiting for ammo that'll never come. Usually a supplier will tell you this during checkout. :cuss:

Just called AIM and talked to Eric. He says they are out of the SA .308 and don't expect any more. Best I can do locally is $386 for a case of 1260 which is ~ 30 cents a round.

Ah well, it's only money...

Mannlicher-

Thanks for the info. on Frugal Squirrel / John's Gun Shop. I called and ordered a case. I talked to Martin and a lady whose name escapes me. They are some of the nicest people I have talked to from a gun store. :)

First off, it is stated clearly at Aimsurplus.com that they need your DL before any purchase is made. They shouldn't have to "remind" anyone when it's printed clearly on their site.

Secondly, is Silverbear steel cased? I'm a little leary of steel cased ammunition, since I've been hearing about so many Wolf KBs happening in FALs. I do NOT want to risk blowing up my new STG58.

Yep. DSA steel type II receiver with an 18" barrel. It looks too good to be true, resting against my bookshelf.

I've heard there is a considerable wait to receive the rifle after you order. True? Did you order it direct with a transfer, or have a dealer order it for you?
The local indoor range has a couple of SA58 standard models for sale. One of them probably has a couple of rust spots now from my drool! Pricey, though. About 1550.00 IIRC. I need to get a receiver so I can put my Imbel kit together.

DH, FYI I was led by a link directly to the .308 page at AIM, no such DL requirement was indicated there. I went through the checkout procedure, gave them a CC number and they confirmed my order, no reference to needing a DL throughout the process. Only when I went back to see where my order was a week later did I stumble into the requirement while looking for a phone # on the home page. They could have done the courteous thing and emailed or called me. For example, I once got a call from people in TAIWAN, 15 minutes after I had placed an order online with them, to tell me the product was out of stock. Now THAT'S customer service!

Guess I'll try John's myself and see what happens there. I'll let you know.

I picked up 4 cases of SA at the SLC gun show on Saturday from Miwall. I think it was ~$315 for a case of 1260. I did this before I knew that AIM was out... I did it to avoid having the UPS man ask my wife what I do with all of the ammo I keep buying... She is getting tired of that.:D
