308 win for white tail

So you are going to ignore what Hornady has on their site and quote their older load manual which has been superseded by the 9th Edition manual.

Are you really willing to use a match bullet for hunting and change injuring an animal which could possible suffer for a very long time? That is unethical and completely avoidable by using the proper hunting bullets.

What exactly do you think happens to the A-Max when it impacts an animal? You are acting like it will instantly cease to abide by the laws of physics.

And trying to discredit a load manual simply because the company has released a newer manual is really reaching. Using that logic all of the data within the book is now invalid

The A-Max works just fine as a hunting bullet on light skinned game. Bullet placement is still the top priority. And the A-Max will penetrate plenty well after impact.

I have a DPMS .308 rifle (since you're using an AR) and have great results both in accuracy and function/reliability with H4895 (different than IMR 4895) and the 178 Amax. Unfortunately, I have not tried the combo on a live critter yet. The 178 Amax is interchangeable with my 175 Sierra Matchking for both velocity and accuracy. I had read the 178 can be used for hunting as well, so I have both match ammo (SMK) and hunting ammo (Amax) without tweaking my recipe. I get about 2560 FPS out of my 18.5" barrel. With the lighter Amax bullets (155, 168), you should be able to get the velocity higher and shoot flatter to ethical hunting ranges.

I have dpms 308 as well. I use 150 fmj at the range and 150 nosler green tip for hunting and they work very well. I load IMR 4320 and shoot those 150's consistent to 800 yards shooting .6 moa@100

Hey, back off. I don't give a damn what you do when hunting but there is no reason to attack me only because I repeated what Hornady said about their own bullet. Do what you want but don't argue with me, argue with Hornady! You act like you have an interest in Hornady.

anything you use should be fine.find out what the rifle shoots best with.if you have access to a chronometer, use it.they are not that expensive.do you have other rifles that also use 308 like garands etc?if so,load for the garand so you don't mix up the ammo.ar-10 is more forgiving than a garand.

i was going to get caldwell's premium chrono kit but a few things came up like tuition and car problems. i do currently own a cetme sporter in 308 but that thing is hard on brass and i have not shot it since i bought it for dirt cheap. if i was going to invest in a 308 it would be a remington 700 sps.

i'm using the 125 gr nosler bt for my new 300 blackout build which i still have not shot yet so hopefully this saturday. i might just settle for some hornady interlocks for now. if i have good success with the nosler bt i would experiment with the 150 gr nosler bt.

Getting back to the original post.

I have ran loadings from 41.8 grains of 748 to 48.5 grains, with 150 grain JSPs. The velocity spread goes from 2548 FPS to 2865 FPS. With my M1A, 22 inch/1 in 11 twist, I got the best accuracy (a consistent .75 inch @ 100 Yards) with 43.0 grains and 2677 FPS (32 test samples average).

Your weapon/s will need to be tested with a number of loads to find what works best.

Sorry, I don't use the other powder, so I can't help with loads using it.

As for bullets, most any soft points will do well. Follow the makers descriptions for selection.

LOL

If anyone is advocating ignoring data, it is you.

You pointed out that they did not recommend the AMAX for hunting, I pointed out that they (at least at one time) did recommend it for hunting.

Why not let people see all of the data and decide for themselves? Do you have some secret knowledge of something that changed in the AMAX line that makes it suddenly unsuitable for hunting purposes? Or could it just be something the marketing department decided was a good idea? Maybe they thought selling one bullet that serves target shooting and killing animals wasn't the best way to make a profit? I have no idea. Do you? Please share it.

Since (according to you) a person that uses and AMAX bullet to hunt is unethical; Is that person still unethical if they've not seen Hornady 9, but only have Hornady 8?

Were they unethical before Hornady 9 came out?
