What's the pros cons with a 308 and 300 Win Mag? Would be for Deer, and punching holes (wanting to try to get into long distance stuff) How is the recoil out of a bolt action rifle on a 300 win mag compared to the 308? Thanks.

EB

.300 Magnum kicks like a SOB. I saw an interview with a military rifle team shooter who said that the recoil broke up their prone position and required repositioning between shots.

What do you consider "long distance?" A .308 Win is sufficient for 1000 yards with the right load.

I use both, both have their places. The 308 might be a better choice for punching paper and general hunting inside of 500 yards. That being said, the 300 win is a great long range round.

The recoil of .300 WinMag is stiff but it won't kill you. Most of my deer have been taken with one. I have never felt the recoil from a single shot at game with any rifle. Granted, if I'm going to put in a long day at the range, I'll take a .308.

My approach to recoil tolerance is a mite different than most folks, though. From what I've heard and seen, most people try to work their way up to a certain level. I work down. After shooting a few rounds of .458 WinMag, it's a relief to pick up that light recoiling .300 WinMag. I've found that with anything stiffer in recoil than a .308 that constant practice is the key to handling recoil. YMMV. Felt recoil seems to be highly variable. I know people who are scared of a .308's recoil.

My 300 Win Mag's recoil does not bother me with 150 or 180 gr.

I talked to a guy Saturday at the gunshow how tore his retina with 300WM recoil. He had to lie on his back for a few weeks.

Clark, once again I have to ask...

150 gr Sierra 2125 soft point boat tail:

308: 3050 fps
30-06: 3167 fps
300WM: 3300 fps

I'm digging through all my reloading manuals and databases, and the best I can do for a 150gr bullet in .308 Winchester is 2900fps.

Same search for the 150gr bullets in .30-06, we get a hair over 2900fps.

So watcha doin' there, Sport, and what kinda pressures are we running, assuming you aren't squirting those bullets through a 30" barrel? :scrutiny:

In other words, El Bucho, those velocities listed aren't your garden variety loads, so don't take them as representative of what you'll find in the world of .308, .30-06, and .300 Win Mag.

Right, Clark?

I got 3077 fps avg in 30-06 with a 150 gr Nosler ballistic tip. This was Hodgdon's max load of 62.0 gr of H4350.

Sanity seems to be relative to your frame of reference, and I don't read load books anymore, I make up my own loads. They work for me.

I took 11 rifles to the range, put scopes on them, and gave them each a chance to go elk hunting. I told you about some velocities from the Sav 99 308, VZ24 30-06, and VZ24 300WM

The winner was Mosin Nagant 91/30 7.62x54R 180 gr Sierra 2873 fps, and it went elk hunting in 2005.

Same Clark? Enough already.

I took these chono graph data points while getting ready for elk this fall:

Assuming this is the same 'Clark' I've seen on several boards. Please take this as polite feedback.

- There is a part of me, the engineer, that has some interest, and finds some twisted value in knowing where limits lie, performance ceilings exist, and appreciates insights into warning signs. Then again, that side calls for carefully controlled tests, and doesn't believe posts on the internet.

- There's a part of me that's a single dad, that doesn't like this type of post, for fear of what a newbie would do, considering it somehow useful.

- Then there's the gun nut and reloader in me. He's pissed the 1911Forum on reloading was closed because some poster, with a very very similar handle posted some over-the-top loads and the forum was closed, and is yet to return, for fear of something similar to the previous post, and the scurvy of lawyers that would follow.

Please, enough already.

3000 + FPS for a 150 gr 308 load seems to be a touch hot...

Hottest I ever got with mine is 2875 and I backed down off of that...I prefer case extraction to be easy and brass that is reloadable...not a piece of modern art. :uhoh:

of course...with a 125 gr nozzler :p BT I can get about 3050.

I have found that as I get more into reloading I prefer more and more to go with lower velocities...I dunno if this is a result of me liking to shoot more, be more economical with powder, the better accuracy that is generally found with those loads, a combination of all of these or none of these...I guess I am just past my "hot rod" stage of reloading...

When you throw 500 gr. slugs out of a 16" TC in pistol form, and destroy two scopes and one scope mount...you tend to get an education... :scrutiny:

3050 is probably possible, with something like a 34 inch barrel. The palma shooters with 30" barrels get 2950, yet you say you get 3050 out of the 22" barrel of a Savage 99? I don't believe you did that without going well over pressure. :scrutiny:

I went back and looked at my notes.
It seems my 308 had loose primer pockets, that did not reveal themselves at the range, so I just kept shooting groups.
That's what I get for not working up a load, and just making one up.

Next time, I am not taking 11 rifles to the range.
