Just picked up a TC Pro Hunter in 300 Win Mag. I was really after the frame but since my other Contender barrels do not fit the Encore line and the barrel was relatively inexpensive I decided to pick it up too. I would like to load rounds that are closer to 308 Winchester rather than getting beat up by the 300. Has any one tried this with any success?

Thanks!

M,

My Speer manual shows reduced loads ranging from 1700 to 2000fps for 150gr, 165gr, 180gr and 200gr. For mild hunting load try 56gr of Re15 with 165gr bullet. Should kick it out at around 2655fps. You can go to Speers website and find more loads.

Care needs to be exercised when reducing powder charges in magnum cases. A potential hazard of secondary detonation can occur if certain conditions are met.

I believe that listed start loads in manuals and at the www.hodgdon.com site will give near top 308 Win velocities, and a reduction of recoil compared to factory 300 WinMag.

Your job would be to find an accurate start load using the bullets of your choice.

Hodgdon also lists reduced youth loads using H4895 at about a 60% level.

Avoid loads that don't fill the case past the 80% point -- and 90% if you want decent ignition consistancy.

Bite the bullet and go get some 3100.

As noted above, Trailboss looks like the program. There was an excellent article in Handloader Magazine about reduced loads using it.
