327 Federal magnum

The 100gr Federal cartridge offering in .327FM had the same velocity rating than the 85gr. Both were 1400fps from a 3 1/4" barrel. That's plenty fast to expand a jacketed hollowpoint.
From a 5 1/2" barrel the 100gr jhp was at 1655fps. 85 gr isn't listed as being tested from a 5 1/2" due to overspin, not stable over 1400 fps,
The 32 H&R magnum with 100gr factory load was rated at 1208fps as a comparison.

In .327FM the 100gr and above can be loaded to potential of the cartridge and the 115gr Speer GDHP actually outperforms the 85gr in ballistics because of this.

So, yes, the 85 gr is more pleasant to shoot than the 100gr or higher because it is loaded down so the short bullet will be stable in flight.

I chose 85 grain because full house 100 grain .327 is... stout and that's in an SP101. Put that in an LCR and not only and I deaf and blind, buy my hand and wrist need an ice pack for 15 minutes.

I don't think 100 grain JHP from a .32 Mag will have the velocity needed to expand from a snub.

BB makes wadcutters for it.

I have been loading the .327fed for 10yrs. Love this little jewel.
Use 83gr, 85gr, 90gr, 100gr, and 115gr mostly, with great performance in all.
Hardcast, plated, and jacketed.
My barrels are 2", 3", 4", 5.5", 6", 10", 14", 17", and 23"
Unquestionably in the top three of my favorite calibers.

I'm just starting to load them. I have some Montana 110 grain hard cast with GC's, and some sample 100 grain coated and only XTP in jacketed so far. Maybe you can give me a couple suggestions?

I’m doubtful that the 85gr is loaded down due to stability issues.
What proof of this do you have?

Hornady lists in their #8 manual that the 85gr .312” jhp is rated for 750-1550fps. A rate of twist suitable for a 100gr bullet is certainly suitable for the 85gr bullet.

The often stated reason for the reduced velocity is first; preventing over expansion limiting penetration, and secondly, offering a lighter recoil with less muzzle blast. (The .327 is almost as loud as the .30Carbine BlackHawk). Lastly, an 85gr bullet at 1500-1600fps has a MUCH lower point of impact than a 100gr bullet at same speed... The reduced velocity of the 85gr will result in a POI closer to POA from a fixed sight revolver such as the Ruger LCR or SP101.

btw, I AM holding out for a 3” LCR in .327 IF it has the adjustable sights.
And will be all over an S&W Mod16 “Classic” .327Fed, if they ever make one. I’ll take one even if it has the “hole”.

Maybe this summer I'll finally get around to doing something about its stiff DA trigger.
RUGER SP101.jpg
I bought mine back when they first hit the market, my trigger was pretty stiff also. When Wolf finally started making spring kits for it I took it to my gun smith and he did an action job on it and put the spring kit in it. It made a world of difference in double action and single action both.
They slick up really well and mine is one of my 25 yard shooters now.
.327 magnum 25yds.jpg This target is 25 yds with reduced loads and my cast bullets, shooting off hand, standing, which is the only way I shoot. I'm no bullseye shooter but I was happy with it from a 3" barrel. The red dot is 2" dia.

I had RangerPoint Precision make me up a rifle in 327 to go with my Reeder Ruger. I think that is a neat combination. Have not had a chance to use them yet. Family will not let me go to the ranch alone. Probably get out during deer season.

Federal put this statement out years ago to explain why their 100gr ammo's velocity was faster than their 85 gr ammo was.

It _could_ be the case that a higher speed (thus higher spin rate) was needed to properly stabilize the 100-grain bullet. That isn’t the case here, but it _could_ be with the right bullets & twist rate. That’s different from saying the shorter bullet needs to be run slower in order to stay stable in flight.

Here's my GP-100 that I'm actually working up loads for using 98gr MBC DEWC in Starline 327 Brass...It's a hoot- no recoil

I took somewhat different approach, I sent a K22 barrel up to Alan Siegrist in Mi. to rebore and rifle for .32(a years wait) When Alan sent it back I sent a S&W model 15(LEO trade in) along with a K22 cylinder to Andy Horvath(another 9 months wait)and had him build me a K32, one of my grail guns.Shoots great.
I really like the looks of your 'Ruger in this caliber, also.

My sp101 is my favorite 6 shooter at the moment. Using my 90gr hand loads it's very accurate as far as I care to shoot.
The trigger on this one is pretty good. It's my ccw most of the time, occasionally the sr9c goes.
Now if I could only get a single shot h&r in 327 I'd be set. Alas they are no longer in business. Maybe Henry will grace us with one.

I was going to get one a year ago, the Single Seven stainless, the one that looks like a Ruger Vaquero but my interests took me other places.
I decided I'll just stick to the calibers I already load for, the .327 was to make use of my .32 dies that I have no purpose for other than loading .32 S&W for a Rast & Gasser.
Lately though I do think about supporting the resurgence of interest in .32 caliber. Because the main point of interest for it is that you get a medium size handgun that holds more capacity than regular.

:D

Jack Huntington....

Had a 1961 53 with the extra rimfire cylinder since 1975. Burned out the original barrel and was lucky enough to find a period correct one. Was not planning to shoot any more Jet from the gun and had several other S&W .22s so this one just sat...

Jack had the old barrel rebored and rechambered the rimfire cylinder to .327. So the gun can be put back to original by some future owner if they want but the rimfire cylinder isn't available...

Neat thing is the rimfire cylinder serial numbered to the gun and the caliber marking on the barrel is now .327 MAGNUM...so it looks original factory...

I also have a Ruger LCP and Freedom Arms 97/6.5" as well as .32 H&Rs in a Ruger S-S 4 5/8", stainless 4 5/8" birdshead and a 4" S&W 16-4....

Great fun time calibers...

Just bought some Underwood Xtreme Defender ammo on GunBroker for $28.00 a box...that is $4.00 less a box than from Underwood and Underwood is out...
