I was wondering about whether to get a .338-06 or to just buy a .338 mag and download it most of the time.

Who makes .338-06 chambered rifles?

I like the .338-06 cartridge from a ballistics standpoint. I don't really need full power .338 and don't really want to deal with the recoil. I don't plan on hunting the great bears but would like something that is perfect for moose up to 250 yards. Something with more bullet diameter than my 7mm mag.

What are you thoughts?

Thanks.

338 win mag.
outstanding cartridge, recoil is blown out of proportion w/ it. it is more pleasant to shoot than my 300 wsm, and 7 rem mag, and far more pleasant than my 300 win.

you can always load a big cartridge down, but a little cartridge will always be a little cartridge.

as for who makes one... i'm sure somebody, somewhere does, but it is generally a custom chambering - therefore either a custom/semi-custom gun.

Personally, I'd go for the .338-06. It's got more than enough power for anything reasonable. If I wanted the power levels of the .338 Win Mag, I'd actually go up-caliber and buy a .375 H&H instead - same level of recoil, but a significantly bigger bullet, and a stellar track record on anything up to and including elephant. Far more versatile, IMHO, than the .338 Win Mag.
