Hello
I am new to this site and chose this site because there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here.
I currently picked up a savage 116 ss 338 win mag. I picked this gun up next to nothing from cabelas during there home town hero weekend. i like this gun but want a little more out of it. So my question is can I chamber this gun to a 338 edge or rum by reaming out the barrel and use the existing action?
I'm sure this question has been answered and I tried to search but not having much luck.

Both the 338 RUM and 338 Edge are rimless cases while the 338 Win Mag is a belted case. Both have approximately the same body size sans belt, so reaming it out is not going to work. Being a Savage, the easiest was to convert it would be to buy a new barrel in the desired chambering. You could very likely sell the old barrel to offset the cost.

The 338 RUM is a doable conversion, barrel wise. The magazine might require some tweaking. The RUM case is .550 at the base while the Win Mag belt is .532 so the RUM reamer will clean the old chamber completely. Not familiar with the Edge round.

The Edge round is a necked up 300 RUM. It just has more powder cap than the 338 RUM since the case is longer.

Thank you for your responses. The 338 edge is also known as the 338-300 rum. I guess I might just stick with the 338 rum as there is only about 100fps between the two rounds.

I believe the 340 Weatherby might be doable with it's basic belted case and more capacity, not sure on the magazine length though. It will gain you 200fps over the 338 WinMag.
