November issue of The Rifleman had a nice review on a revision of a .357 -1911 frame semi auto called the Coonan Classic. Anyone owned/shoot one of the originals or had any experience with this company ? Or the idea of having a .357 auto. Seems like a good idea, especially if you own a .357 lever. Apparently includes spring for 38 sp. Remember few issues ago it was pointed out that at one time a .38 semi was the pistol of choice for the AF team. Is a .357 semi a good choice ?

I think you might be confusing several different guns into one lump, so just to make sure we're on the same page, the Coonan .357 is larger than a standard 1911 .45ACP frame.
I had a first version .357 Mag Coonan back in the early 80s... this was a 1911 type locked breach model. The 'B' model uses a simpler, more modern linkless design. The frame, to draw a comparison, is closer to a Desert Eagle in size than a 1911.

The original Colt 1911s you might be referring to that were chambered in .38 Spcl were (originally) modified from .38 Super guns back in 1950s by gunsmiths such as Jim Clark and Austin Belhert.
Clark Custom Guns, now run by Jim Jr. continue to build .38 Spcl bullseye 1911s. They are very accurate, very expensive and most likely a gun to be used by highly ranked target shooters.

You also might be thinking of the .357 SIG cartridge, which some have taken to calling the .357 Auto (me included)... but I don't think so.
