Sorry about sort of getting off topic.
But, the OP can learn from this too. Don't be afraid to stick your neck out.

Hollow points.

I know I said I do not care for hollow points.
In my Encore I use the 250 grain MZ. These are insane. They open on impact and drive deep. The spin creates a meat cutter and destroys anything in its path. I have found these in deer on the going out side. But, they dropped that deer dead in its tracks.
Barnes says they would not open with .45 Colt velocity. OK.
But, In a Ruger with warmer loads they will. They will also open wide like that at 24" barrel velocity. I am looking into a .357 round to do the same with. I cut the one in the picture to give it a crimp groove and some slider cuts to reduce drag. I do intend to test these and see what I end up with.

I have nothing to add on its effectiveness against hogs, but a good 357 load out of a carbine will out perform 223 in terms of energy and you have a much larger/heavier bullet. Its an xtp so I wouldnt suggest it, but underwood has a 158gr load that will get you a little over 2,000fps out of a 16" gun. I have successfully loaded a 158gr hard cast to similar velocity with lilgun powder.

I think any hard cast bullet with 160-180 grains and a big'ol flat meplat running at anything north of 1600 fps in .357, would work just fine inside 100 yards. Follow up shots would be fast, and you have an easy follow up out of the carbine. I'd go with the .357.

Also, don't be too worried about being charged by a hog. I've hunted them for over 35 years and have never seen a hog charge or personally know of anyone experiencing a charge. It can happen but they aren't exactly cape buffalo.

On Youtube you can find all kinds of videos of charging wild boars. I've heard from two people who have had first hand experience of that, one was just out taking a walk and killed one with a 9mm that charged him.

I agree. When the shooting starts, the hogs take off like greased pinballs on fire, and on rare occasions they may run in your direction. They aren't after you, they're looking for cover. Usually they either start running in the direction they were already heading, or they turn and run back from where they came. Usually whichever has the closest cover.

Oh, okay. Well, I don't watch Youtube videos. I hunt. I'm just speaking from my personal experience. I've never seen it happen and have never felt in danger. No one I hunt with has ever had a close encounter. I killed three last weekend while still hunting and managed to escape destruction. Not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying it hasn't happened to me. They do get testy when you trap them though.

To the OP, you have gotten the straight dope on what bullets you should use with your .357, head that direction and you will be fine.

Along the lines of those 45 bullets, I like those a LOT. I have played with several different profiles out of my Redhawk and find it is hard to be the simple ol Lee 255gr RF for 90% of the things I would ever need, but that don't keep me from playing.

I also have one of the Accurate molds very similar to the one mentioned above only in the 280C version. It shoots well out of both the 45 Colt and my 454 and hits with plenty of authority from either one.

As for the charging hogs, yes it is rare but if your on top of them in the tight cover, they can and will charge if you leave them no option. I have also had a couple that felt the need to share the pain after being shot and had them either try to or come straight to me to do exactly that. The scariest one was this ol bruiser who took a broadside 140gr BT out of my 7x30 Waters at about 40yds then proceeded to come straight to me slapping those cutters. In the short time he took to get there I made it to my 25-06 which was standing against a tree behind me and managed to put a 115gr Partition through him from the other direction at about 4" from the muzzle. HE past and turned around at about 20' and was coming back for more when the two rounds soaked in and over he went still slapping the cutters.

Not a lot of fun for one person to have out in thick woods with help a LONG ways away.
