360 BuckHammer from Remington?

I’m just happy to know that .358 200gr LRN bullets are being made again by Remington. I want about 700 of them and I’ll be all set for retirement reloading.
No kidding! That 200 grain .358 CoreLokt is the best one ever made. The Hornady and Sierras aren’t bad, but there don’t hold a candle to that good old CL.

I picked up some speer 180s in 358 when they seem to have done a run in mid 2022. Shoot very accurately, but haven't had a chance to apply the metal to the meat with them. Would love to buy a bunch of core lokts. Even better would be new factory brass to go with them.

The 180s are a good bullet, especially in the Contenders. I still load the 180s in my 35 Whelen 7600 carbine (peep sights) and they too shoot very accurate. I used to load the 220 Speer bullets until some dimwit at that company decided to discontinue them. I sighted my rifle in at 50 yards (see picture) because where I hunt in the Adirondacks a 50 yard shot is normal and anything beyond that the bullet doesn’t drop enough to matter until you get out to 200 yards and that just doesn’t happen in the big woods were I hunt.

The speer work very well maybe this new round will get them to make a 200, the 180 and 220 are nice but something about a 200 grain 358 going 2000-2400 that's magical. The rem core lokt hasn't really been a real core lotk for many years, whenever they removed the scallops from the front of the bullets.

I hunt more open terrain and 35 Rem is really kind of short range for what I do, but it has sentimental value. I fooled with loads and had an inch or less group at 100 yards. I am planning to hunt with it next fall. I only have a vintage 3X sight on the rifle, so I would probably keep shots to 150 yards.

I didn’t know that about the CoreLokt. But it doesn’t surprise me that they screwed it up.
And I whole heartedly agree with you a 200gr .358 at 2000-2500 is definitely magical. My go to for my 358 Winchester BLR is a 200 grain Hornady round nose with a full house load of Varget with MV of 2440ish fps. The pictures show what is typical of the end result with that combination.

I would agree the 35 Remington is not a long range cartridge but it does excel within its range limits over what a 30-30 can do. That perfect combination of a 200 gr bullet @ 2000fps producing just over 2,000ft lbs is a lethal combination. The 35 Whelen does all that and a heck of a lot more.

Well, if a cow elk shows up on the same hunt, it will be getting a 180 grain Speer if it is within 150 yards.

I shot a button buck about 6-7 years ago now, thought it was a doe. The shot ended up being a little over 250 yards and was a complete instinctive shot. I had a small window to fire and this deer stopped, i was up higher and shot into the tree tops down. Had a Williams peep and thinking back the bead covered the deer, dropped and didn't even kick. It was one of my better shots, considering I was standing and had no time.

The 35 rem is one of those rounds that may not look the best on paper, even when compared to the 30-30 there's not to much advantages but it hits hard for what it is. I think this 360 buckhammer would be nice, even if it's a flop making brass would be easy and cheap. Pretty much a factory 35-30-30. I think the 350L got lucky on performance of it wasn't for a few of the powders used it would be pretty weak, plus all the false info Winchester was saying.

I agree with you, is the 350 legend a good cartridge? Yes but only in it fills a niche in states that have cartridge length limitations. The 360 BH will be no different. Both cartridges 350Lgd and 360BH seem (so far) to be able duplicate some of what the 35 Remington can do but not all of it. In some ways its a shame new cartridges are brought out (caveats on state limits not withholding) that are replacing the 35 Remington when it never really has gotten the full credit it deserves as one of if not the best “medium bore” woods cartridges that has ever been produced. If I could just find myself a Remington 760 in 35 Remington, I’d be happier than a bear in the bait bucket.

The 35 rem in a 141 Remington is about perfect, very fast almost faster then a auto in field use and handles well. I regret every 14 or 141 I've sold but when you need money you don't have much choice. I like the 358 win but for most hunting it's more then you need.

Been there, done that and I wear the T-shirt that says I’m the idiot who got rid of a good rifle. I like the 14/141 rifles, heck I like all pump action rifles lol.

I disagree on the 350L. I think it is a really useful cartridge for inside 200 yards and the ability to swap AR uppers and have a capable deer cartridge instead of a 223 is a game changer. Medium bore rifle cartridges seem to outperform what the ballistics/paper suggest and the 350 is no different. I like it as an addition to 35 Rem, not instead of it. Being able to use the same mold for cast bullets in both cartridges is nice as well.

We’re you able to track it with such a small blood trail?

It was a quest of epic proportions to find that deer haha. That one actually ran about 70 yards before piling up, the blood trail was almost 3 feet wide in the snow. But thats typically of lung shots that miss the heart.

You will like the Speer. I shot a whitetail with it. It went through both shoulders and through a 3" oak sapling after exiting.
I stocked up on them when a business sold out. So I'm good on bullets. But a new .358 cartridge might bring some life back into availability of the premium bullets.

If someone will build a lever rifle for it I'm thinking there's a market, at least for hunters in the straight wall states. I expect Marlin will jump all over this as they have not yet done anything in 357 in their reintroduced 1895.

350 Legend was a hit with the AR crowd, 360BH should be the logical choice for lever rifles and single shots. I'll christen it the 360 ButtHurt. ;)

I would like to see if it can be reloaded with existing bullets and possibly some reformed cases like 30-30. I'm sure there won't be any new brass available. Also it will us a large rifle primer, I assume.

I would rather have it use a SR primer. For straight wall states. It makes sense. If it can push a 180 at 2200-2400. It would be the sweet spot for a lot jackets people and be able to push 200 grain cast at 1800-2000 without pushing pressures beyond cast wheel weight bullets abilities.
I have a 357 lever and a 35 Whelen handi rifle. So it would be right in the middle without needing to buy different bullets.
But I'm downsizing my arsenal.

I hope it's just not a Henry round, the last few Henry's I seen were pitiful the early remlins looked good compared to the last Henry I saw. A nice cheap single shot would be nice.

On the 35 rem, who has the rights to the cartridge. Is it remarms or is it remington/ Vista, things may get funny if ruger wants to make 35 rem guns but Vista doesn't want to take sales away from the 360bh.

I wonder what it will do in a Marlin . Easy to make from 375 Winchester brass (55,000 psi) . Looks to be just a barrel swap in a 336 , same bolt , lifter as 30-30 . I could see this outselling 35 rem . There will always be brass available , at least if you don't mind forming it .

35 Remington is a SAAMI cartridge and thus in the public domain. Their is no rights or IP related to a cartridge once it is submitted to SAAMI. That is a condition on it becoming a SAAMI cartridge. Once in SAAMI anyone can make the cartridge or guns chambered in the cartridge.
