I'm considering a S&W 3rd generation 9mm, specifically a 5906. They are definitely under the radar these days with not much being said about them. I'm interested in your opinions, experiences, etc. Are the tacticals from the Per. Ctr. much of an improvement over the standards? Thanks.

I'd prefer a standard but I have never shot a newer "tactical" model,I think the big tactical marking is ugly. I like the all steel construction of the standard old model too. I do feel 3rd gen non value series Smiths tend to be a bit pricey though for what you get. I'd say a CZ75 is equal in performance for a lot less.

My friend has a 4506, 4006 and 5905 and he does not like them very well though. I hear the performance center 5906 is a very nice gun though and shows up in IDPA matches a lot.

I own three 3rd generation S&W pistols, all in .45ACP. All are reliable and accurate. My 4516-1 is an all-steel compact model that is easy to shoot well but a bit heavy. The 457 is the same size, but has an alloy frame and is one of the "value line" models. I've been very impressed with it. I also have a 4563TSW which is a full-size alloy framed pistol with accessory rail. I could do without the rail, but the gun is very high quality. I've replaced the factory grips on all three guns with Hogue rubber grips, and it is a big improvement in feel and handling. I think the guns compare favorably to just about anything on the market.

I picked up a used but not abused 3rd generation S&W 6906, with a total
of three magazines for $235. This gun wasn't carried or shot a lot, as it
does not have any scars, marks, or amputations :D ! Oh, it came with
box and docs as well. :uhoh:  Think I did pretty darn well.

BTW, we had two S&W 5906's offered for trade last week in our shop,
one we were willing to put $250 in, the other we could only sink $150
into. We took the better one, and let the well used (and abused) one
go.

I've had my 6906 for quite a few years now, much of the time on duty in my holster or at the range qualifying as a LEO. Without a doubt, the most reliable pistol I've ever owned ( and, trust me, I've owned quite a few).

3rd gen S&W's are my favorite pistols - they just fit me right. Have a 3913 and a 5906, love 'em both, will be looknig for a used 4506 in the near future.

One of my favorite firearms. Bought it when they first his the street years ago and still shooting it. Pretty good shape for almost 20 years!
