Police have snagged four men in the critical shooting of an off-duty Memphis police officer during a robbery.

And late Monday there was an all-out hunt for Remeco Antonio Pennington, 27, believed to be the man who shot Officer Tim Brown during a robbery last Wednesday at the Kroger store at 7942 Winchester.

An arrest warrant charges Pennington with attempted first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated robbery.

Brown was in satisfactory condition Monday and likely will go home in a few days, Memphis Police Director James Bolden said.

The four men in custody face the same charges: Alfonzo Johnson, 22, Demond Robinson, 27, Kenneth Taylor, 24, and Martin Cox, 25, who police say admitted to being the lookout.

Johnson left his fingerprints in a stolen white Pontiac Grand Prix used in the robbery, providing police with a crucial break in the case, according to the charges.

Four gunmen in ski masks burst into the store and immediately shot Brown point blank. He was wearing his Memphis Police uniform while working his second job as a security guard.

The robbers took Brown's service pistol, which hasn't been found, Bolden said.

As one of the robbers stood over the critically injured officer, another robbed a customer service window, Bolden said.

Police would not say how much was taken in the robbery, but said it was not a large amount.

The robbers fled in the Grand Prix, abandoned several blocks away at an Olive Garden at 7774 Winchester. They then switched to a green four-door car and took off.

Police say the men had apparently cased the store, and would've known an armed officer would be inside.

Police would not say if the bank branch inside the store was the original target.

Bolden described an intense investigation that followed the shooting, involving gang, auto theft and robbery task forces, drug officers and agents from several federal agencies.

"I am proud of our collective effort," he said. "We were able to put the pieces together."

There may be more arrests, he said.
