Beretta or Sig IMHO

...

I'd say take a look at either a Beretta Px4 40cal, around 450 bucks NIB, or a Sig P229 40cal, around 850 bucks NIB

I know the Sigs come with Sig Night sights that glow 24/7 for aprox 8yrs, and some of the later Px4's are also coming with real night sights, trijicons, IIRC.

With the Sig P229 40cal, you'd also have the option of changing it to a 357, as well, having 2 guns in one, 9mm as well if..

Either the Beretta or Sig are one of, if not, the easiest guns to disassemble, inspect, clean, reassemble, bar none.. KEY IMO.

Sig P229 40cal, DA/SA decocker-only

Beretta Px4 40cal, DA/SA F-model Safety-decocker in one; or G-model - decocker only

Both are reliable, dependable, and very accurate..

A Man has got to know his limitations, you and I agree there.. :)

Hmmm, Arizona.. Cold nights and days during Winter times, I'd say spend a little more and get the Sig P229, also several model variations to choose from, see here:

I love my S&W 4013.

It's widest part is still narrower than my 1911 and it's short barrel makes it excellent for a horizontal shoulder holster. And I like the ambi-safety.

The grip in relatively narrow (width) but long (front to back). That makes it an excellent fit for one of my hands, but not the other.:scrutiny:

8+1rds is all you'll get though. There are no extended mags or aftermarket grips (that I've found).

They run $325used-$440NIB.

Hoorah!

Semper Fi....

Well you are asking a alternative to the "Plastic" pistol, so here is my suggestion. The compact CZ and also the RAMI by CZ. If I am may say they will hold the locked and cocked similar to your 1911 and also a full metal pistol. The compact holds 10 or so plus you can have a full sized mag for a spare. They are also affordable.

I hated Glock pistols until my job required a Glock 23 as the only choice. I have since learned to appreciate this pistol's simplicity and reliability.

Is it my first choice? Not by a long shot - but I know it will function when the spit hits the fan.

Still waiting for the CZ P6 (40 S&W) to hit the shelves. If its anything like the 9mm CZ P01, it will make some people take notice.

Kahr K40. It may lack in the rounds carried area, (6 + 1 with standard mag), but being all steel with the rubber grips it is a fine handling weapon. Recoil has not been an issue for anyone shooting mine. Smooth trigger right from the box.

I'm actually surprised I'm the first to mention a Kahr.

What do you mean by "compact"? I carry a USPc .40. It is "compact-er" than a full-size USP but not as small as some of the other suggestions so far. On the other hand, it has a 12+1 capacity and since you mention you have fairly large hands, it might suit you more than some of the smaller guns. I certainly don't find it difficult to carry or conceal.

If you're used to a 1911 setup, you'll find the the USP familiar and can even carry cocked-n-locked if you want.

re-read

Guys,
after re-read my last post concerning my reasoning, it seemed snotty and a bit agressive, I hope no one took it as such as this was not my intent.
That being said, I want to thank you all for ALL of your responses, they are a help, and have caused my to consider and start researching makes and models I didn't think of before.

Springfield Armory XD40 subcompact. 9 + 1 capacity.
Length/6.25 in. - Height/4.75 in. - Empty Weight 26 oz.

Sweet shooting guns. To me, they point so much more naturally than a GLOCK.

I have the Service model, and I love it. 0 problems.

Welcome to THR and Merry Christmas.

I can add nothing to this. XDs are better than glocks i think.

additional question

Lonestar, thanks for the additional info, you caused me to think of another question regardiing semi-autos in general.
If you have a semi that likes to run "wet" ie. a lot of grease or other lube in and around the mechanisms, what do you use? I own one of the early model hi-cap Para-Ordinance .45's (P14-45, 13 in the clip and 1 up the pipe) all steel model) it had a tendency to jam (feed failure and a few stovepipes) I solved the problem by following up my gun cleaning with a light (very) coat of "Tri-Flow" lubricant and disassembling the mags and cleaning then polishing the feed ramp with "Brasso"...never had a feed failure or stovepipe again. What about you guys? What do you use?

...

CH,

You have the right receipt for keeping them running, as "timing" is the key for semi's (in general).. being properly lubed and clean.

Winter/Cold, I use good gun oil, and when in doubt, I simply use the Vertical method, slide locked open, and put some down the rails, and let gravity take it down, then after a min, cycle the slide some 4 or 5 times, just before I head out..

And for the most part, when I'm at the range, I take both a small bottle of oil and a small tube of Tetra white gun grease..

Grease goes on any wear spots first, and I swipe rail and guides with it during the Hot days, then, if in doubt, do the Vertical oil application..

These are my main products:

(no smells) M-Pro7 gun oil, cleaning solvent, cooper removing bore-gel solvent

Tetra white gun grease

EEZOX (a synthetic, metal to metal bonding lubricate &*cleaner), that in very thin applications, drys, which I use for the mags and mag springs, along with rust protection and for *light cleaning, with Q Tips or bore snakes. Making metal to metal dry-lubrication, great for mags (does not attract dust, dirt or powder residue) and is first layer of protection for gun/s*

But the *EEZOX goes on first, after gun is clean, before any grease or oil applications, again, directions on can.

All products mentioned, IMHO

many thanks

Fellow members, I just ant to thank all of you for all your insight and opinions, I didn't really expect the large show of support.
I hope everyone had a great Holiday and New year...thanks again
Matt

i'm 5'8"-9" 150-160 and what i carry most often is a USP 40, it's wonderful. also they were designed right from the start to mimic the 1911 as far as controls go, but with more versatility. 13+1, i have a hogue grip sleeve on mine, i can't reccomend the hogue grips enough for any polymer pistol.

Ill add my voice to the chorus of XD subcompact fans. I see that you are a 1911 fan. The grip angle of the XD is much like that of the venerable 1911 and the XD also has a 1911 style grip safety. This may provide a better platform for firing in your comfort zone. Any way you choose, may you be happy with your new pistol!
