Just recently I had a 40 S&W barrel fitted to my SR 1911 10 mm and weather permitting tomorrow will be testing day. Biggest question is will the 40 feed from a 10 mm mag. Was going to get a couple of Tripp 40 S&W mags but they suggested that a 45 auto mag may work so I'll take a Tripp and Wilson 45 mag along and we shall see if it works.
And before anyone asks 40 S&W is easier to find and cheaper,I do reload 10 mm but it's nice to have the option of the lighter caliber.

I have a 10mm CCO with a .40 S&W barrel fitted as well, and have no problems shooting the .40 from the 10mm magazines.

Should not be any trouble. But give it a test. The HK MP-5 in 40 or 10 mm used the same magazine.

Standard 10 mm mag wouldn't feed 40 S&W I tried ,2 45 acp mags 1 Wilson the other a Tripp mag. Wilson would feed Tripp would not. Pistol shot low using 165 gr Winchester white box ammo. I'm going to try seating bullets out further in the cases to try out at a later date

I shoot 40 S&W out of my stock 10 mm barrel in my glock 20 stock 10 mm barrel stock 10 mm magazine no problem I have run at least 100 round through it

I forgot to mention I have 2 different recoil spring assemblies, the stock spring that's around 20 lbs and a lighter spring that feels around 16 lbs. Both worked didn't think the 40 S&W ammo would work with the heavier spring. I'm reluctant to fire 40 ammo out of the 10 mm barrel as the case is being held by the extractor rather than head spacing on the case mouth as it should, don't want to stress the extractor causing it to break.

From what I understand, a lot of people shoot .40S&W in their 10mm pistols, saves money.

Everything I have read is the Glock 20 is exceptionally reliable shooting .40S&W. The OP can try it and see if the gun feeds the ammo reliably.

Somewhere on the web I read firing 40 s&w ammo out of a 10 mm 1911 puts stress on the extractor which is what is holding the case rather than spacing on the case mouth like the 10mm. As stated above I don't want to break the extractor then not having the pistol while the extractor is being replaced.

I think that in "theory" the extractor could break. In the real world I doubt it would break any sooner regardless of the ammo used. There is a fairly large difference in the length of factory brass anyway. And once you start reloading ammo even more. You'll probably find the extractor is already doing more to hold the brass than the case mouth with any semiauto pistol in any caliber. Even the ones designed for it.

I have no idea how well 40 ammo will feed in a 10mm 1911, but it feeds and functions just fine in the Glocks I've used. Even with 10mm barrels. I think the only real concern is that lead could build up in the longer 10mm chamber from extensive 40 ammo being fired through them. This has always been an issue with 38 in 357 chambers. But is easily corrected by cleaning.

As stated I had a 40 s&w barrel fitted to the pistol and a Wilson 45 cap mag was much more reliable than the factory 10 mm mags
