I have a Ruger Redhawk 7.5" stainless that I am going to be hunting whitetail deer with this year. Several years ago, I had a SBH 7.5" that I reloaded for and I always use a 240 XTP bullet. In the area I hunt, 100 yds would be a long shot, with most well under that. I am not going to be able to reload this year, so I was thinking about using the 180 or 240 XTP round or another 180 HP or JSP round. I know the 180 bullets would have a bit less recoil, but I am not concerned with that at all. My main objective is accuarcy (I know different guns may prefer different rounds) and I know any 44 magnum round is more than enough for a thin-skinned whitetail deer. Any comments or suggestions?

I have been very happy with using the remington 240 semi jacket soft point.
they have always passed thru the deer and seem to drop um quick.

Howdy,

I shoot Winchester Silvertips out of my 7 1/2" Redhawk and Super Redhawk both. It's the most accurate round I have found, period. There are more powerful rounds but none that I have found to be as accurate, which is the most important thing to me.

I have never taken a deer at 100 yards with it, I took a Bobcat at 95 though. :p The deer I have taken with it have all been under 60-75 yards and two within 10 yards. I would not hesitate taking a 100 yard shot at a deer with this round, I just have not had the opportunity. The Silvertip is real good with bone too.

@Marshal

Where in Green Country, Oklahoma are you located? I live in Roland, OK which is right across the state line from Fort Smith, AR.

I have thought about the Winchester Silvertip, but wasn't sure. I have always shot Silvertips in my 30.06 and really liked them.

I'll be using Speer 270 gr Gold Dot soft points this season. They are among the most accurate loads I've shot from my Ruger SBH, and recoil is quite manageable.

DBM,

I'm on the outskirts of Tulsa. I got a ticket in Roland once about 20 years ago, going onto I-40. He said I didn't come to a stop before merging. Then he pointed to stop sign blending into some trees way past the turn. I was like :what: The cop was Badge #1. LOL

Try the Silvertips and see how they do in your gun. Even though it's the same gun, the results could be different.

I would suggest the 240 xtp out of the ones you listed.Ive seen too many ppl loose deer from a perfect heart shot with a 44mag loaded with 180s but find them a few days later.

one swhot one kill

The last deer I shot was a doe, about 140#. Used the Speer 270 gr Gold Dot out of a Ruger Redhawk. Deer dropped in it's tracks, literally.
