My application

240-250 grain plated bullets at moderate velocities. Nothing crazy.

I read H110 might be a little much for this application. Universal seems to be well recommended. Any other suggestions to keep my eyes out for?

I have blue dot and titegroup on hand. Will these work out at all?

Please share personal experiences! I'm new to .44 magnum.

What did you get? I'm looking at getting a Redhawk. I'm interested in what folks post to your thread. I'll probably do like I did with my 357, after the first round of factory, I'll just load my own.

IMO Titegroup is way too fast a powder for and respectable velocity without excessive pressures. Universal is better but still too fast IMO.

I agree H110/W296 might be too much for plated bullets especially since that powder does not react well to downloading. How about 2400? 2400 is a real magnum powder but it can be downloaded. Unfortunately you probably haven't seen any 2400 in a long time. Longshot would do a good job with a plated bullet and deliver good velocity and accuracy too. You might want to look for some 4227 which will also do what you are looking to do. AA#7 and AA#9 if you can find either will also do a good job. Maybe with those choices you might be able to find some powder to load with... I hope that helps a little.

Unique for plinkers. 2400 for everything just above a mild plinker.

Blue dot will work, 9.0gr would be a max. 44spl load with 240gr bullets. I would start at 10gr of BD and work from there.

Comrade Mike, has Blue Dot which will work well in 44 mag with plated bullets. I have not seen unique or 2400 on the shelf in over a year where I live.

All the AA powders will work in the .44mag. I load a lot of .44 Spls also. With AA7 you can load about any velosity you want.

blue dot. load data in the lyman 49th edition. should be just what you need.

I used 231 for medium to light loads. Worked well. I use aa7 for stronger loads just to use up the powder. It does well but I won't buy it once I use it up. Not my cup of tea.

The bludot you have will work alright in the 44, but day in and day out wild to mild 2400 is my favored powder in the magnum case. Unique serves well in 44 special cases.
H110/296 work alright but are better when used with jacketed bullets. Lilgun is another choice that works fair with jacketed or gas checked cast bullets.

I use titegroup cause it's all I have 9.0 gr under a 225 hp gives me good accuracy out to 25yds. Haven't tried shooting it any further than that

I've loaded and fired about 600 rounds with Accurate #9. Worked great. Just bought five pounds of imr 4227 but havent loaded any yet. Couldn't find any more #9

I don't think there is another powder as popular or capable of full house magnum loads than H110 / 296 is. It's anything but moderate.

A good powder, and one that will offer you everything from moderate to near maximum potential, is 2400, great powder. It's very capable of being manipulated in this regard, and it doesn't need magnum primers.

I've also loaded quite a bit with Blue Dot, it too is a good powder for moderate to pretty stout loads.

I've used many a pound of blue dot for just that application. It will serve you well.

Just don't try to push the 'maximum velocity' envelope with BD and you'll be ok.

I am a huge fan of Titegroup in my slower loads due to the fact that it generates pressure for given velocity that help cast bullets "fit". Very accurate IME. This from the 32 H&R to the 500 Linebaugh. My go to powder for all slow loads. Mid-loads see HS-6 and I rarely shoot stout loads but when I do they see IMR/H-4227. My two bits.

Chalk up another vote for IMR-4227 with plated bullets. I've had good results.

For you Titegroup users, anyone load 240 gr plated bullets with 9.0 gr? It's under the max load but for some reason I've been leery of shooting them.

Moderate velocity for me is 9gr. of 700x or unique.

Above that, the IMR 4227 comes out along with jacketed projectiles and mag primer.

I have seen titegroup data, but cant comment since I haven't loaded it in 44mag.
