.44 Russian in a Marlin 1894?

Here is a quote from an article that I came across.

Unlike members of the first generation of center-fire blackpowder revolver cartridges, which were loaded only to 6-8,000 CUP [for use in iron frame pistols], the 44 Russian, a member of the 2nd generation, is loaded to higher pressures (12,000 CUP) for use in steel revolvers. To keep the 44 Russian rounds from being (very destructively) fired in 44 American revolvers, the 44 Russian case is 0.060" longer (0.91" vs 0.97"). The Russian can be fired in 44 Special and 44 Magnum firearms (though long bullet jumps tend to preclude reasonable accuracy)

Why would you want to do this? If you are a cowboy shooter using black powder I could understand this. 44 Russian cases/ammo are much more expensive.

I use 44mag cases with Clays for CAS and 44 special cases for BP or subs (777). Either will cycle in my Marlin without problems.

I think the russian round is too short to cycle. I could be wrong.

Whats the point. Just load 44 mags down and you can do the same thing. I like 6 grains of red dot with a 240 gr laser cast SWC in mine. Its a nice round in a 4" mag revolver also. I used to use 5 grs of bullseye for the same thing. The red dot fills the case a little better.

I cannot recall trying to shoot 44 Spls through my M1894, but I don't think it would be a problem at all. Nor shooting 44 Russians.

I can recall reading in Phil Sharpe's book "The Rifle in America", and looking again, on page 409, he describes how the mechanism of the M1894 will allow short cartridges to feed through the action.

I don't wish to hijack your thread, however, I have been trying for several years to get Uberti to produce their Henry rifle, steel frame, in .44 Russian caliber.

'But Milo, why do you want a .44 Russian Henry when there are .44/40 Henry rifles out there now?'

Answer, 16 shots in the magazine instead of 11 and have you ever tried to reload .44/40 shells?
.44 Russian so much easier to reload, the case size is excellent for the powder capacities and powder selections used in Cowboy Action Shooting and the cartridge itself is inherently accurate from a rifle or revolver.

.44 Russian is still an excellent cartridge that suffers from not enough choices in modern made firearms.

I should also add that I could possibly accept an 1866 Winchester copy in .44 Russian if Uberti made one in an iron frame version and improved their loading gate for this rifle design

Why would you want to do this?

Capacity mainly. That, and just because.

I like shooting .22 shorts in my Marlin 39 sometimes, this would be tantamount to the same thing on a larger scale

I reload, and .44 Russian brass is right around the same price as .44 Mag.
