Bearspray

Yes, I carry bear spray and that was my Plan A and the .44 Mag was my Plan B. I have no idea IF there would be time for Plan B IF Plan A doesn't work. I hope to never find out....

Lots of vids out there showing how to reload spent primers. Downside is the amount of time it takes, and they will be corrosive.

Wouldn’t do it for 9mm, but even pre-craziness cost of .44 special/mag would make it worth it imho

I never knew one could do that! Time and corrosiveness are two attributes that are not appealing.

I agree. In a pinch though....

Last time we had a dumbass/Democrat president and there was a run on primers, I swore to myself I’d never run out of primers, powder, bullets. Friends laughed....now I’m the one laughing.

I know exactly what you mean! I have plenty of small pistol primers, powder, bullets, and cases for four different handgun calibers. I never thought I would have needed large pistol primers.....lesson learned!

Long ago, at a gun range far, far away, some bench-rest shooters came up with the idea to use small rifle primers in large rifle primer cases to concentrate the flame and squeak another 0.02"-0.05" of long-range accuracy out of their rifles. Answering the call, Remington made bushings to convert LRP cases to SRP for some Wild, Wild Wildcat rounds - .308's reformed as ultra-high-velocity .22's... and other such madness. IIRC, it involved pressing a steel bushing into the primer pocket and it was a permanent alteration of the case. I've read they held up well with no leaks or blow-outs, despite reams of horror prognosticated by naysayers. Maybe one of the dedicated BR shooters here remembers that and what it was Remington sold to do the conversion. (???) If not, it shouldn't be hard to get some mild steel tubing the right outside diameter (0.2085-0.2100) - I'd go on the high side and press-fit - and a reamer the right inside diameter (0.1730-0.1745; a.k.a. SPP pocket sizer/uniformer) and cut short lengths that can be pressed into place to convert your own .44Spl/Mag brass from large to small pistol primer. The depth does not change (0.1170-0.1230).

Soft steel pressed into place should not need to be crimped but you can always get a primer pocket crimping tool and crimp the converter in place, just to be double-dog sure. It may be cheaper and faster in the end than sourcing and stocking large pistol primers. Or not.

Hope this helps.

Hi Folks,

I saw Grabagun is having a sale on 44 special Mag-tech ammo for around $.86 per round—that is the best I’ve seen since all the hoopla started

I wanted to give an opposing opinion that I think the Ruger Alaskan is a beautiful, purpose-made revolver! I love looking down at the top strap—that thing is thick enough to be a bridge span. Mine is a 44 Maggie and it balances fine for me. I put on a hogue grip without finger grooves (made for the GP100) and it soaks up the recoil just fine for me. The double action trigger pull on mine is very good being smooth throughout the pull with no hitches or noticeable stacking. Single action is very crisp and light. Touching off 44 mags are less traumatic to ME than say, a model 19 with .357s.
Mike
Oh—I EDC mine with 44 special “Anti-personnel” Buffalo Bore cartridges.

DAMN—I just rechecked Grabagun and it is gone. I had a few in “cart” but chickened out after I looked at my gun funds balance—mostly composed of empty brass and moths

FWIW, Matt's Bullets is now accepting orders again. I was quoted a 3-4 week shipping time, but at least they are accepting orders again. I mention this because he sells a three different 44 wadcutter bullets that could be used for defensive carry. I favor the 215gr but have also ordered some 250gr wadcutters to experiment with.

Both my Mountain Revolver and my Model 69 love Matt's 185 grain wadcutter and 7.5 grains of Unique.
