.44 Special Ammo Availability?

44 special comes into it's own by reloading it. I've never seen or shot good factory 44spl ammo. It is usually under powered, or not accurate , or both.
Components are abundant to reload 44spl. Brass, bullets everything. So you don't need to cut down 44magnum brass. 44spl brass is as strong as 44mag brass, just made 1/10th inch shorter. You can tailor a good accurate load for your 44spl with relaoding.

Fine Fellow,

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, and thanks for making reference to my post.

Harve,

My thought was that I shoot quite a bit of .44 Mag, and it would be nice to use that brass in a .44 Spl as well. Fortunately, I have accumulated a fair amount of each type of brass at this point. I'm looking forward to handloading...

I have a Charter Arms 44 SP Bull Dog I purchased this past winter. I have tried to shoot some heavy loads in my little gun to see what it could take. the hottest load was 13.5 grs Blue dot pushing a 180gr JHP. This load does bark. The best load for practice is a 240 gr LSWC pushed by 5 grs Green Dot. This is my primary pistol loaded with a CorBon 165gr JHP, Velocity 1050. Energy 404 Ft/lbs. I don't know how you could get the performance of the 44SP in a smaller package, weights 20-22 OZ unloaded. The gun has a good set of grips that absorb a lot of recoil. I talked to the guy at the factory and he told me I could shoot any round that did not exceed SAAMI which is 15500psi.

price & availability depend upon your area; more ma-n-pa shops will have it, but might cost more since they order in smaller amounts; sporting goods chain stores that specialize in hunting will offer more varieties with prices a bit lower; expect more target loads than defensive, especially lower velocity 'cowboy action' loads...nice soft shooters; price overall will seem high, especially when .44 mag seems to cost the same; more people own .44 mag revos than .44 spl, so more .44 mag ammo is loaded than .44 spl; I found a great 'reloader' based in PA that will reload .44 spl for you when you send brass to his company...even with shipping it is very economical vs store bought stuff...www.mastercast.net; I currently have .38 spl, .357 mag, and .44 spl offerings on order from him; this is my first time using his stuff, but a fellow THR member posted a recommendation about his company a while back, so I took a chance; good luck whatever way you go
