I am considering purchasing a Rossi 2" barrel 44 mag I saw at Academy, (because a 44 mag for under $400 is hard to pass up :)), and I was wondering about 44 special defensive ammo. What are some of the choices for available for a 2" barrel?

I'll add that the 200gr golddot can be had in several loadings, both Blazer and Speer 44 Special, the 44 mag Short barrel load and I use Georgia Arms same 200gr Golddot and brass cased for about the price of blazers.
You could go the Buffalo Bore route to but IMHO thats a lot of $$$ for little if any gain.
I really wish Hornady would load their 240gr lead SWC HP to about 850-900fps.

I hear Buffalo Bore is having a sale on 44 Magnum with 300 grain bullets. You should buy a box and try a few in the Rossi!

Video or it didn't happen ;)

Just DON'T buy the Win Silvertip HPs. Worst load I ever paid for. Like 709 fps out of a 4" barrel. :(

rossi has gone in and out of business a few times I think. I know that the current rossi company stated that they will not even work on my rossi 720 made in 1999 (should I need repair).

at least charter arms will work on their older guns for a large fee after all is said and done. rossi wont even recognize my older gun of theirs.

For my Interarms Rossi 851, Rossi CS referred me to Mike McClellan, who has the stash of parts and knowledge of the guns. He had what I needed...original factory rubber grips (w/logo).

It's my understanding Charter Arms has extended their lifetime warranty to their older guns as well.

Make sure you get that Rossi in your hand before you commit. The last new one I handled , a SS 357 , had lots of cylinder play , and - when I worked the cylinder back and forth with the gun in lock-up I could feel the trigger move back and forth. Not good.

A 44 mag needs a good , strong platform.

If you only plan on shooting .44 Specials anyway, get a gun chambered for that round. The a Charter Arms Bulldog is a great carry gun.

My personal preference is to the Barnes 200 grain .44 Special TAC-XP bullet as loaded by Corbon and Buffalo Bore. I also enjoy the 200 grain hardcast wadcutter from Buffalo Bore.

Not quite. Listen to the discussion with Charter's president here.

Per that, Charter will charge to go over the gun made by a prior incarnation of the company. Once that is done, that gun is covered.

.44spl defense loads....

For the .44spl, Id look at these popular defense rounds;
The Corbon DPX, the Star-Fire 200gr JHP(it may be 180gr, check the site), the 200gr Speer Gold Dot JHP, the MagSafe Defender, the Buffalo Bore defense loads(they market 3/4 well engineered .44spl loads for carry-defense), the Glaser Safety Slug(silver).
Some knock the frangibles & "exotic" rounds but I think they have merit. For larger calibers like .44spl, .44magnum, .45LC, etc they can work well. Low muzzle flash, low blast, high KE level, reduced ricochets.

I happen to like the Silvertips in my Special. Also have a like for Double Tap's 240 grain hollowpoint. Run them both through S&W Night Guard.

They're good for zombies, werewolves and vampires. Cuz they're "silver". Cuz The Lone Ranger used'em.:D

Well, those are better reasons than their screaming (...that is, screamingly anemic!) velocity!

ive heard more than a few people talk about the new version C.A. bulldog .44spl being a good gun.

I don't know what happened to the three I fondled at Gander Mnt, but they were all out of time.

if I could handle a stainless old school version and found it sound, id make a very reasonable offer to the owner.... just haven't been able to find "that" gun.
