I took my new 44 Tracker out today.

The brand new 44 arrived in poor condition: the grip was full of holes and the hammer was rubbing a groove in the frame (top right). Long story short, I sent it in and nothing got fixed. I did a little smithy work and put on a new Hogue grip and we set out for our maiden voyage. My old faithful Redhawk tagged along for comparison.

I loaded up some hot loads and mild loads. Now the Tracker is ported so I was expecting this loud crack like the stories I heard. I didn't notice it being any louder than my Redhawk. I wanted to try rapid fire so I reached into my mild loads and grabbed 5 rounds, not knowing my 3rd bullet was a hot load (I use silver colored primers for mild and gold primers for hot). I fired as fast as I could and when I hit that 3rd bullet it jumped considerably but recovered pretty fast, it surprised me and stung my hand a little. I looked at the spent cases and sure enough a gold primer on one.

I fired several in both guns and the recoil is totally different. The Taurus stings the hand but recovers a hair faster. The Redhawk rolls upwards and the recoil is more pleasant. I purchased the Tracker for hiking. The Redhawk 49oz the Tracker 34 oz. Now the Tracker is not a Redhawk!!.... but it performed better than I thought. I'm familiar with the Redhawk so I hit the soda cans more often, but the Trackers accuracy wasn't bad.

My 5th and 8th grade boys came with and I let them shoot their 22's. They shot the Redhawk so they could tell their friends at school they shot a 44.

Thanks, I just thought I would share our Saturday adventure with ya'll. :)

The bottom line is you were happy after the trip.A little
quality time with the family and some nice shootin' irons.
I too have the .44 Tracker. It is big,but not so big too
carry on a hunt or hiking,or as I have done a few times,
just for the fun of it,I concealed carried it.Like you I also
have some higher priced guns.Ruger Blackhawks. No Redhawk
but I know the Redhawk is quality plus.I'm turning to Ruger now days.
I like the way they are well built.Heavy?Yes,but they'll last
forever. My Tracker is a keeper. With proper care,i look for it
to be past on to my sons, which are a little older than yours.
Actually I may pass it on to my grandson, whom is older than
your sons.;(..d#$% I'm old.
P.S. I like my Tracker, but I'd have to choose that Redhawk
any day and twice on sunday.

Sounds like an enjoyable day on the range. Just waiting for the sun to come up so I can head to the range also. I have a 44 Tracker and a 44 Super Redhawk. I've only had the Tracker for less than 2 months and I'm having some heavy problems with it already. Hammer locks back, cylinder locks in place. When it locks up you have to take the side panel off and fool with the fixins. Sure I could send it back in and then go through that whole thing for the next 6 months. It certainly is no Ruger. It's going to be Ruger or S & W from now on. The Tracker is a nice gun to look at but at this point, I have a beautiful paper weight. Live and learn I suppose. I'll trade it along the way after I get it fixed, upgrade to something else. I have no confidence in and don't feel good about the Tracker purchase...

BigN-- Yes....live and learn, and I would suggest fixing it yourself or taking it somewhere else. When I sent mine to Taurus they sent the fedex guy right to my house and they paid the shipping both ways (your call). My gun was gone for 1.5 weeks and came back with dark grease all over it.

I was thorough on the phone and in my letter about the two problems. She told me on the phone they would fix the rubbing and replace the grip. I just cant understand what goes on over there.

If you want the 1-800# just go to their warranty repair status link and type in a goofy zip and serial number and a 1-800# will popup on the screen. ;)

Well good luck with your gun, I hope you get it fixed.

I am glad you and your sons had a great time. You can't compare a Taurus Tracker to a Ruger Redhawk. There in a different class of revolvers. I believe the Redhawk is about the strongest 44 magnum revolver other than the super Redhawk. The Taurus will be fun to shoot but will not take the loads of the Redhawk.

Good luck,
Howard

Buy Brazilian :banghead: and you will get Brazilian quality. :barf: Buy Ruger :) and you will get some of the most rugged, brutally strong and accurate wheelguns in existence. Period. End of story.

Not to steal the thread here guys...... I don't know if I'd have one of those Taurus on the place. Just from reading the threads, and problems they seem to have in abundance, the thought process from the firearms builder not fixing them, there are a lot better firearms out there to be had. To each his own, but if the hammers stick back, the cylinder won't advance, what possible good are they to keep, especially if one needs on ASAP? Just my opinions.

We're getting pretty fast turnaround on the Taurusssses we send in for repair...the big problem is that we have to send too many of them in. They were tied for first with another brand for most returns from the shop for repair that shouldn't have been necessary if they'd looked at them before shipping. (main problems, small frame locking bolt and timing issues, medium frame headspace and barrel/cylinder gap issues, Judge oversize chamber throats causing severe leading).
Pricing on the Taurussssses has been climbing steadily.
Stocked a couple Rossi small frame SS revolvers a week ago and they seem tighter, timed better and lockup better than the similar T guns.
I'll stick with my Smiths and Rugers and a couple fine old Colts in the revolver realm
