I'm sure its been done but my search didnt show it so give me your all time favorite 45-70 loads, from bunnies to dinosaur and any in between. I'm just starting but Im all in so im sure that others are as well :D

500 grain .458 dia soft lead bullets, over 65 grains of FFFG, ideally Swiss.

32 grs of IMR 4198 under a Rem. 405 gr JSP. It's proven to be a quick whitetail stopper for me on several occasions, and runs at about original 405 gr. trapdoor velocity.

The following are NOT trapdoor safe

These were shot with a Marlin 1895 with 22" bbl
45g IMR 4198 under 405g Rem JSP gave me 1913 avg fps with ES 15.39 and SD 8.66

50g RL-7 under Hor 325 FTX gave me 2042 avg fps with ES 20.72 and SD10.77 (as a reference factory Hor LeverEvo 325 gave avg fps 1910)

24 grains of 2400 under a 320 grain lead bullet. A mild .45/70 load that anyone can shoot. The load works best with a wad of dacron to hold the powder in place.

250 grain cast lead .45 Colt bullets over 10.0 UInique for short range plinking.

385 cast, gas check over enough 3031 for 1600-1700 FPS for hunting anything in North America.

Lyman 457124, 380 grain, soft, sized to 457 with alox/beeswax. Five grains DuPont Bulk Shotgun Smokeless, fifty-five grains DuPont FFg, wax wad. Seat bullet into rifling. Shoot. Reload same case, do again.
Have targets shot with this load in my Numrich barreled rolling block grouping five into an inch at 100, under four at 200..aperture sights.
Nice thing, two wet, one dry, one oiled patch and you're done for the day.

ruger or browning 78 85 only.......... 61 gr of 3031 with a 300 gr jhp killes deer like nothing i have ever seen! im looking for a load safe for my marlin guide gun thinking about a 350 jsp loaded hot as i can use in the marlin?

In my Marlin 1895 (Microgroove, 1974 manuf) I use 53 gr of 3031 under a 300 gr Sierra or Hornady (doesn't matter) JHP or JSP for consistent 1" groups at 100 yds. Velocity is around 1800-1900 fps, and I could get more velocity with 4198 or more 3031, but a 300 gr pill at that velocity equals knock-down. It's just hard to improve on that load - any animal I ever shot with it went down like they were hit with Thor's Hammer. I will add what many would pooh-pooh as internet fiction, but which I assure you is factual: I haven't adjusted the scope (Weaver K3W, ~1978 manuf) since 1979. I have been careful not to whack the scope, and the last time I shot it, about 2-3 yrs ago, it cut the same 1" hole that it did in 1979 and many times in between. "Mongo impressed!"

In an Marlin 1895G...

25g of 2400 under a 350g cast for 1390 fps.

45g of Rx7 with the same 350g for 1640 fps.

51g of H4198 under a 300g Hornady (practice) or 300g Speer (hunting) for 1930 fps.

12g of Unique under a 300g cast bullet is a powder-puff plinker that's very accurate at 1115 fps. But whatever your process is, make sure as heck you don't double charge one.

Maj Dad, I too used to use a 300 gr. jhp over 3031 ( 52 grs, about 1700 fps), and I took several head of deer with it, but changed to my current load for two reasons. The biggest was that a large corn fed buck presented me one fall with only a quartering, facing shot and the slug hit the largest part of the front shoulder joint ball, and while he was retrieved after going about 30 yards, the bullet did not exit, stopping on the far hide, & left NO blood for a trail, which fortunately, I didn't need that day as I was hunting in pasture. Had that event occured in some thick stuff I hunt, I may have lost him. It's why I went to the 405 gr Rem JSP & IMR 4198 . You get an exit hole and blood....every time. 3031 also used to leave unburned powder in the bore, which was a little agrivating. 4198 burns much more thoroughly for me, leaving a bore almost spotless. We do agree on the fact that one does not need thermo nuclear loads in the 45-70 to be very effective in the hunting field, all the while being just as accurate and more enjoyable for long range sessions than the max loads.

The last deer my 405 gr. load was used on was a 140 lb field dressed doe, harvested this past November, pictured below. Regards, all.

24 gr of XMR 5744 under a 405 gr MPS hollow base, starline cases and sparked with a CCI 200. I shoot this out of a 1886 Springfield cadet model with really nice results and easy clean up.

Bear in mind that .45-70s loaded with a 405 lead bullets over 70 grains of FFFG, for about 1300-1350 FPS killed tens of thousands of buffalo, mostly dead right there in their tracks.

My Trapdoor load is 30gr H4198 under a 405gr Lead bullet. Sorry but I haven't sent that load over a Chrono yet but I'm guessing it's under 1400 fps. (which is what I was looking for)

I got a 45/70 handi rifle for $100 at a gun show and wondered what load level to use from my load book; trapdoor, 1885, or Ruger #1.

I got some help calculating the strength of the firearm from my father, the chief engineer gun designer, and a mechanical engineering professor gun buff.
I learned what a section modulus was.
I learned what a pin in double shear was.
I calculated it could easily take double the top pressure, that of published Ruger #1 loads.

I started my work up with a trapdoor load; 405 gr hard cast with lube bands, 46 gr IMR4895.
One shot kicked 4 feet backwards and gave me a stabbing burning pain in the shoulder for 10 minutes.

I did not fire another round from that rifle for over a year.

~ 1.5 years later in March 2001, I shot 30 gr IMR4895 405 gr cast and shot groups at the range. Recoil was tolerable, but the trajectory was like a rainbow.

In 5-11-2010 I did some experiments with that rifle with compressed loads:

.458" 145 gr Collar button bullet Lyman mould #457130 from Western
Bullet co MT

The powder was set on top of the capacity reducer in the case.
The bullet was set on top of the powder.
The cartridge was gently lifted into the chamber while staying vertical
so the bullet would not fall off.
The action was closed and that forced the bullet into the lands.

0.6 gr Bullseye .....287 fps........ quiet
0.7 gr Bullseye .....384 fps........ quiet
0.8 gr Bullseye .....354 fps........ quiet
0.9 gr Bullseye .....388 fps........ hollow sound but quiet enough
1.0 gr Bullseye .....441 fps........ sounds like a loud pellet gun, but
no blam
1.1 gr Bullseye .....418 fps........ sounds like a loud pellet gun, but
no blam
1.2 gr Bullseye .....536 fps........ sounds like a very loud pellet gun,
but no blam

31 grains of IMR 4198 with a LFP 405 grain bullet for fun

And for serious work

44 1/2 grains of IMR 4198 with a Beartooth Bullet 425 grain bullet

250 gr cast 45 Colt bullet over 20 gr of 2400 or if you have a Browning 1185 or Ruger No 1 2 cast .456 wadcutter made from a Saeco mold block over 20 gr of 2400. Very accurate out to 50 yards. Nice squirrel load.

Did you leave a number out of the price? Was it a complete gun?

That was ~ 12 years ago. The guy was in a wheel chair moving around with the rifle and wanted $150. I offered $100 and he took it.

Saturday at a gun show, I got a 1957 Rem512 mechanically like new for $60.

If there were guns show shopping contests, like there are bass fishing contests, I could be competitive.

405 Grain Slug Loads

One shot kicked 4 feet backwards and gave me a stabbing burning pain in the shoulder for 10 minutes.

I did not fire another round from that rifle for over a year.

I loaded up some heavy 405 gr loads for my straight stocked, hard curved buttplate-ed 1895 & fired about 2 or 3 and gave them to a friend. They didn't hurt; they were excruciating and bruised my entire shoulder, and I was/am a long-time center-fire, large caliber shooter. Stock and butt plate design are serious considerations for these combos; the 300 gr loads don't get anywhere near it.

I have shot trapdoor rifles with 70 gr black powder and it was ok.
I have shot a handi rifle with a trapdoor [pressure] load made with smokeless and it hurt.

This is ~ how tough I am.
I can shoot a 30-06 factory ammo prone with no recoil pad, in a sporter weight rifle.
It hurts, but I can fire a few 5 shot groups and stay focused on the target.
That is about my limit.

i loaded some 350 jsp today for my marlin guide gun used 55 gr of 3031 they are pretty ruff in that little gun
