I have an Encore rifle in 209X50 Magnum. Great rifle. I have been thinking about picking up a 45-70 bbl for it, as it would basically mimic the performance of the 209 with sabot loads, but without all the fuss of the black powder. The BP is fun, but you really have to be in the right mood to spend an hour to shoot 6 times.
I already load for the 45-70, a Marlin Guide gun. I am curious what type of loads the Encore can handle. I am familiar with the three loading levels ( Trapdoor, Marlin, Ruger #1) and wonder where the Encore fits into this spectrum. Can it handle the Holy Mother of God loadings or should it stay in the Marlin level?

Hint: Buy the 28" Pro barrel!

Hint: Buy the 28" Pro barrel! They are sweet! Nothing drops game faster then .45-70! Even in a 15" pistol, on-the-spot drops!

Specifically, the Encore will handle ANY amount of power that a bolt will handle. They are used for .416 Rigby, .338 Win Mag, .300 Win Mag, .375 H&H, even .300 Weatherby!!!

Yes, they take more abuse than any lever action.

The ProHunter is the latest Encore offering from T/C. It uses 28" stainless fluted barrels.

One of the nice things about the Encore (and most any single shot) is that, due to the absence of a breech bolt, they are shorter than their repeating rifle cousins. This allows the use of a longer-than-normal barrel without making the rifle any longer overall. A longer barrel usually gives better velocities (never shot 45/70 to know the specifics) but it also balances better and has a different noise signature.

I would keep power levels around that of a siamese mauser/Ruger#1 or mebbe a bit less...

This is, of course, with the caveat that your shoulder holds up to it.

I have shot an Encore 15" in 458 Lott...and then shot a whimpy little 500 S&W 15"...

Honestly, you don't want to shoot those off a bench-rest...my elboes were bad enough (scraped up) with the Lott...the 500 finished my day there at the ranch....

A 15" Lott? Words fail me. I doubt that I'll be doing much max loads out of it, but it's nice to have the capability. Always fun to launch a boomer and get some stares at the range

Can I hijack this thread for a while? Pro Hunter Questions

Has anyone bought one of these? I'm serously considering it. If so have you also purchase any Centerfire barrels and shot as well? I'm more interested in using smaller calibers that the hog you guys are talking about:evil:

I'd like to expand the BP and possibly use a 22-250, 7mag a 204 if they come out with one

Thanks,
