I'm new to this forum and just getting into metallic cartridge reloading. I would appreciate any advice related to a load I need to put together for a 45-70. The bullet I plan to use is a Barnes 400 GR FNSP Cannelured to be used in a Winchester 1886. Thanks. Tom Held

For your Winchester I think IMR-3031 will work best. H322 works well too depending on which your rifle likes better. Some 45-70 reloaders also like 4198 but that wouldn't be my first choice unless like before, your rifle might like it.

For older Trapdoor rifles Accurate 5744 works extremely well.

Thanks

Appreciate the leads. I've got a good start. Hodgdon does list 3031 and 4198 as two of the recommended powders for this Barnes bullet. I'm also going to call Barnes directly. Got two weeks to get this right to go to Colorado on a Bison hunt. Thanks.

Watch what pressure levels you are loading for. My old Hornady manual has low pressure loads for the Trapdoor Springfields (equivalent to black powder pressures), mid range for lever actions like the 1886, and high pressure loads for modern single shots like the Ruger #1. Not even loaded to max, my #1 shoots right through elk w/ a Hornady 350 gr. RN. I use 4198, but can't remember how much, and can't look it up right now because I'm at work.

In my Marlin Guide Gun I use 44.0 grs of IMR 4198 with a Hornady 350 gr FN. With a scope on this rifle I can get 1 - 1 1/2 " groups at 100 yards but with peep sights, as it's set up now, I don't do quite so good as this 53 year old eyes don't see as well as they use to.

Blasphemy!

You are treading on hallowed ground and the proper load for an '86 Winchester in 45 Government would have The Holy Black under it!

Nothing to the loading. Pick a nice 400-500grain lead round nose bullet. Put enough powder (Fg) in the case to reach the bottom of the bullet when seated + .125 or so. (Should be 60-65 grains with modern cases) Add a card wad and seat the bullet. Shoot and kill the buffalo, elk or whatever you hit. It will go down just fine.

Shooting a modern Barnes bullet in an old Black Powder gun IS bordering on an act that will have you in Pergatory for a LONG time.

Just my opinion.... if you are looking to stay close to Black Powder pressures....the Holy Black is THE answer!!! Don't resist the force of the Dark Side! SUBMIT!!
