45-70 With 365 Grain Cast Bullets

So many loads. 45 70 is the most fun. Want to knock your hat off, jar your head or just get the bullet to clear the barrel like a 45 colt.

The loss of trail boss and tin star was a major disappointment
I could deplete a bottle of trail boos so fast I switched to 5744 and Buffalo rifle. Works for what I do. Still have 1 1/2 lbs of TB. I'm a powder hoarder . Any one else? You just never know what's next.

As far as recoil go just put a recoil pad on it. If it was a collector Winchester or Marlin would be a different story, but tame it with a Decelerator pad.

This is my Winchester 71 which I put a Decelerator pad on. The gun has a few alterations from original so not going to lose sleep over installing a pad. Especially from a bruised shoulder.

Here’s a rebarreled Remington 660 in 458x2 American with a Decelerator. I’ll run Barnes 400 grain originals right at 2200 with this one.
My Marlin is an older straight stock 45-70 that I don’t have any pictures of also sports a Decelerator pad.
Built a Browning 71 into a 50 Alaskan and put a Decelerator on it, so I’m sold on them.
The quality recoil pad really makes a difference.
Truth be told I’m not recoil sensitive anyway and I prefer a long pull on my rifle stocks.

Never seen a 71 with full length magazine tube. Do you know anything about that?

Thanks for the suggestions and sharing. My gun has a crescent butt, so no recoil pad. This gun is a Winchester 1886 Limited Series Deluxe Takedown and does have some collector value actually, even though it's a newer one. It's one of 500 made with the octagonal barrel.

I did finally get a pic of it.

I wouldn't touch that, personally. Just get a PAST shoulder pad and call it a day.

I had a Marlin 1895 LTD V for a while... pretty heavy rifle for a levergun... and it had a 1" pad on it. Recoil was still brutal with 'lever-action' loads... but I was shooting it off sticks, not offhand. The fluffy recoil pad didn't make a whole lot of difference. The shoulder pad takes the sharp recoil impulse and spreads it out over a bigger area; I'd take the PAST over a butt pad any day, and particularly with those crescent butts.

Interesting... I noticed that. 20" barrel?

Well that rifle has a little history that I am not aware of, only could see the end result.
I’ll post a couple pictures then fill in the story as I know it.

I bought the rifle off another forum after finding out that the seller lived in Alaska. Made the purchase easier as he was only 500 miles south of me. Nice summer time drive.
But originally as it came to me it had a monti Carlo cheek piece butt stock which was cut down to 12.5 inches. So first off that had to be put back to original. I kept my eye on eBay for close to 2 years looking for an original not a repo, all of which that came up were around &175. It is a short tang by the way.
Then I got a notification that a new offering had been listed. Looked it up and it appears to be original. $20 buy it now!!! So I bought it, I don’t think it was up for sale more than 10 or 15 minutes. Anyway I put a Decelerator on and fit it to my 71. Actually it bolted right up. Nice.
The rifle came with a Lyman steel receiver sight and the full length mag tube. The mag tube is held on with a flat band which I have only seen on 94’s made for a couple years in the late 40’s. I don’t remember the measurement distance that a front sight was normally set back from the muzzle but on the olde levers I believe it was more than this one.
But the mage tube would have to be a Winchester tube from a 1886 50-110 or 50 express then fitted to this gun. The flat band I just only have one idea.
Ok there is a possibility that this gun was assembled at Winchester out of miscellaneous parts to come up with this configuration. The barrel I believe is an original carbine barrel and not a cut down rifle barrel.
Obviously the butt stock had been replaced after it left the factory. A rifle just has no control over the potential idiot that my own it.

So this rifle is one of the best cast bullet shooters I have. I love this rifle. I’ve owned and shot 4 or 5 71 - 348’s full 24” rifles and never really liked them. They went down the road. But this is the right combination of features for me. Having a 14 inch butt stock length of pull helps.

Bazoo that’s a beautiful rifle!
But I would bet real money that it weighs about 10 maybe 11 pounds so you shouldn’t need a recoil pad.

I have a 20" Browning 71 carbine... like you, I love it to death. What my 1886 lacked in handling, the 71 makes up for, and it's no slouch in the power department, either. I only run cast in mine, although I have a box of Hornady 200's stashed... just in case. Those have been discontinued, BTW, so if you shoot those, you better stock up. I get my cast bullets from Montana... the RCBS 200grn gas check FP. Beautiful bullet, loaded over IMR3031. Shot 100 of them this past weekend.

Thanks for sharing. Yes it’s possible that Winchester assembled it from parts. They did a bit of that throughout their history. It is a fine looking rifle. My main complaint with the 71 is 2/3 mag tube. I prefer the aesthetics of a full length tube.

Yeah. My 86 is heavy. Probably 10 pounds, I haven’t weighed it.
