45/70 Options Other Than Marlin?

While thumbing through "Guns of the Old West" magazine I saw a "Sharps Carbine" copy that looked something like the pic "Saxon" put up, but I have no idea who made it, or sells it.
Sorry for that, but I would check Navy Arms or Uberti Arms, or Dixie Gunworks and any other replica arms companies.

I'd be thinking of a Ruger No. 1 in .45-70. There are three levels of pressure to which one can load this cartridge that will offer application in the No. 1. For plinking and typical target use, the Trapdoor Sprgfld load (IIRC, 19,000 PSI) is quite comfortable. Next up is the level you'd put through a typical Guide gun (44,000 PSI IIRC) and finally a "Ruger" specific load which nearly equals the ballistics of the .458 Win Mag. I had the opportunity to shoot a .458 WM yesterday and, frankly, found it as unpleasant as I ever remember it to be. That said, if you need one, the No. 1 will get you there.

Good luck

My next 45/70 will be a little beast.
H&R handi-rifle with the barrel cut down to 16 1/4 and a healthy recoil pad.....
Why? just cause,
I like them short and handi

Whatever you buy, the .45-70 Govt. can be quite an accurate cartridge. I messed up one shot but I was pleased with this result from my Marlin 1895SBL at 100 yards. I have a 1.5-5x scope on that rifle and adjusted the zero after I shot the group.

45/70 options other than marlin

Jeff, I have an H&R Buffalo Classic in 45/70, with a Nikon BDC. It has a 32 inch barrel. The whole rig with scope falls within your price range. I bought mine because it is a legal "primative weapon" in my state. It is very accurate when loaded with my 350 gr. flatnose, handloads. I use a Lee Loader kit, (paid $25 new)
I load cartridges on my coffee table. Now I leave my .270 at home during the firearms season, deer in my state stay in thickets during daylight hours. This set up has allowed me to take deer shooting thru 6 inch sweetgum trees. If you hit a whitetail with this bullet, they wont go far and leave buckets of blood behind. Very affordable, Very accurate! less recoil than the .270

Fun Gun

The 45/70 is a fun gun, I shoot the Ruger 45/70 single shot rifle and the T C Encore 45/70 pistol.
You can Reload for the Ruger down to kill pop cans at 25 yards or Reload up to kill super un-natural creatures at 100 yards. The encore works well on pop cans and can be loaded for most north American game at reasonable range. Use common sense when loading for either and mark the ammo for each. A heavy Rifle load in the T C could get ugly. They are great to play and Hunt with.

The #1 comes with a base already mounted. The #3's are drilled and tapped.

Thanks for all your input and suggestions, folks. Finally found a used 1895G in fantastic condition at a great price today in a LGS and brought it home. I got pretty luck, it was just traded in yesterday and he put it out about an hour before I got there. Feeling great about the purchase.
