Although I haven't seen the straight Remmington stuff in a while. It's either UMC or Golden Saber these days. In the past I've used Speer Gold Dot, Cor-Bon, Golden Saber and Silvertips. All work well.
These threads frustrate me, because they pop up every day or two, and the bottom line is, it really doesn't matter what round you choose.
Generally speaking, any quality JHP will do. However, you have to be committed to shooting enough (200 rounds minimum, 500 recommended) of whatever round you do choose to ensure reliability in your weapon, as well as verify that POA=POI. Buying the latest greatest round on the market does you no good if it doesn't function correctly in your weapon. Shoot what you carry, carry what you shoot.
Ditto Vhinch, all this super duper mankiller ammo is, is a bunch of hype to charge you more for ammo........period. Any full powered commercial HP or FMJ for that matter will perform more than adequately.
Tell me the cast lead 200gr. semi-wadcutters I reload are not deadly.
I like Golden Saber best in our 1911A1 but Winchester Ranger SXT, Federal HST and DoubleTap rounds using a Gold Dot bullet are all good rounds too.
For the most part any name brand ammo currently being produced will do a good job. What works well in my gun might not work well in your's. Find a the ammo that will work reliably in your pistol and the one you can shoot well from that pistol and that will be the one for you. I know people who have several different carry guns and believe it or not, all use a different ammo because of the above reasons.
Mine's stuffed with 200g Silvertips, but I've been thinking about switching to my homeloads - 230g Cast TC over 5.3g W231. Heavy bullet, big metplat, @ 830fps.
Snapping Twig, I'd think long and hard about using homeloads for self defense. If you ever had to use them to defend yourself, you potentially open yourself up to quite a bit of civil liability. The "victim's" lawyer will try to argue that you created them specifically to maim and kill. Virtually all CHL instructors will advise you to use factory ammo.
Federal 230 HST +P, I love it. I've also got a couple boxes of Remington Golden Saber, those feed well in many guns that can be finicky.
HST isn't really that expensive either, not more than a couple of dollars over the cost of ordinary range ammo from places like wally world and dick's. $23-24 and they come in 50 boxes, but you will have to order them online if you want some, many shops won't have them.
That's why I have Silvertips in my pistol now Slippingaway, but I have been reading a lot about this being a myth, so for the time being I'll stick to Silvertip, but I may switch to what I shoot most one day.
