I'm looking at getting my first revolver. In order to keep ammo loading/purchasing simple, I want 45 ACP. I want to know what all of my options are. So far I have:
Taurus Tracker
S&W 625, 1917
Ruger Blackhawk

Are there any other options?

I am assuming this is because you already shoot 45 in some auto pistol?

I am on the lookout for a 610 for the same reason.

I would go with the 625. I like the N Frames and if you plan to use it for self defense the single action would not be my first choice.

For your first revolver a S&W is never a wrong choice.

I shoot 45 in both an auto pistol and a carbine. So far, it's looking like either the S&W or the Ruger. The ruger is due to the fact that I'm looking into Cowboy action shooting and it can be converted to 45LC. With 45 LC I can also go pistol hunting.

A 625 is a dream gun! The gun handles great! The action can be slicked up! Most of all they shoot! And shoot! And shoot! I have three! The gun to get is the 625 JM model, and the reason I say that it has the DX front sight system to make swapping front sights easy! You fiber optics for outside! Nice Gold bead in doors! I do not like the JM grips, but I just plain like the Hogue Monogrip!

Go with the 625.... I have a pc version and love it... Shoot IDPA with it.

As for you conversion to shoot 45 long colt out of a 625 45acp... Won't work. S&W makes both types of 625's (mountain gun) but you can not mix to rounds in the same gun. In addition, the 625 would not be usable for the CowBoy Action Shooting.... It is a double action gun, SASS rules dictate a single action revolver. That means you now have the excuss to buy 2 more single action pistols on top of your new 625.... A gun collection can always stand one more gun....

By the way I use a pair of 357 Ruger Vaqueros (old style) in SASS...

As I read that post he's looking to use the Ruger Blackhawk for Cowboy Action in 45LC, not the S&W Mod 25.

If I could find the right Mod 25 I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I have a Model 25-2, that has a Performance Center Action Job and a 5” barrel, a brand new 625JM, and several Ruger Blackhawks in stainless with 5 ½” barrels and spare .45 ACP cylinders.
Surprisingly, there really isn’t much difference in performance. They are different, of course. I used the Blackhawks for cowboy shooting, and I have used the 25-2 in IPSC. I may use the 625JM in IPSC/IPDA.
You can’t go wrong with the Smiths and Rugers. My personal preferences don’t include the Taurus.

s&w 625 for target/plinking or 325pd for carry. taurus is good too but they have the 5 shot and you have to buy their moon clips and I heard that 45 auto rim cartridges may not work in them. What carbine .45acp do you have dracphelan?

I have one of the MechTech 1911 Carbine Conversion Units. I love it.

What about the pre-25?

Any gun that can let me put 50 shots in a group like that at 15 yards is a keeper! Don't rule the pre-25's out, but they are expensive and pretty collectable!

Get a 625. I've got one, it's an amazing gun. Rugged and accurate, it'll never disapoint you. I would suggest a 625 over many automatics.

How bout the Thunder Ranch Model 22? Not here yet! Something to consider.

They are here! I didn't know of their existence until I saw my dealers' personal one yesterday at his shop. I want one, but his cost on one was $30.00 more than his cost on the Miculek model. He said he felt like they were charging an extra $100.00 for the TR grips and case.:D

Evidently there have been some front sight issues, also. Check out this link:

Colt has a 45 ACP cylinder available for thier Single Action Army but I think only as an option to be added later to the 45 Colt. I have a 45 Colt and I ordered a 45 ACP cylinder from Peacemaker Specialist that is a Colt part not an after market item. During WW2 Colt sent the British Colt SAA's chambered for 45 ACP under the Lend Lease Program when other guns were in short supply.

I'm partial to my long barreled Model 25-2 target revolver from 1980. Mine was chopped, back "in the day," to a sweet-handling 3 1/4" and the action slicked up for fast, double action work and for carry purposes. Several gunsmiths were doing this in the '70s and '80s to the 25-2s because S&W seemed clueless to the awesome sales potential of offering a short barreled, super-fast reloading moon-clipped .45ACP revolver.

Finally, S&W "got it" and offered the 625 stainless guns with 3, 4 and 5" barrel options!

However, I like the handling properties of my chopped 25-2 in matches vs. the full, heavy underlug of the new guns, plus I've grown fond of the blued guns, so I foolishly sold off my very early 1990s era 625. However, this 25-2 is my favorite handgun of all time.

Funny . . . it still thinks it is a target revolver . . . shooting ragged little single hole groups, standing/unsupported at ten yards!

To the OP, pick up a 625, 25-2 or any other adjustable sight S&W .45ACP revolver. You will never regret it!

My 25-2, alongside a Model 36 J-frame to show contrast . . .
