Has anyone used TG under a 230 FMJ in 45 Acp?

My Lyman manual does not list it, but Nosler manual has 4.7 gr Max @ 802 fps.

I’m out of HP38 and just looking to burn this 3/4# of TG I have left. Don’t plan on using tight group anymore.

This will just be range ammo.

When Alliant made finding Bullseye pistol powder hard to find, many of the 2700 Bullseye Pistol shooters walked to Titegroup. It is a great target powder in the 45 ACP. Eight hundred feet per second with a 230 grain bullet was the original 1910 cartridge loading for the 1911. The powder charge, per Clawson, was 5.0 grains Bullseye pistol powder. And you can see on vintage pistol boxes, this was the target velocity.

match ammunition boxes have an 825 fps, but I don't know what the plus or minus was. Might have been the same velocity as what you see above when the velocity tolerances were taken in effect.

After enough consideration, I don't want higher velocity 230 FMJ's in my 1911's. There is no quantification of "more means more", other than more velocity, and more pressure, just beat the gun and the shooter up more. In terms of lethality, and FMJ bullets, what does more get? I would rather have perfect function and excellent accuracy in a semi automatic pistol. I am sure you will find that to be true with a goal of 800 fps with a 230 grain bullet. By the way, don't freak out when in 50 ish weather, the velocity over the chronograph is 770 fps.

Good stuff! I’m just looking for indoor range ammo. Nothing that is hot rodded.

my wife and I are new to the 45, so I bought a 1000 230 pull downs and would like to burn this tight group powder before switching just to HP38.

I really wasn’t looking to work up a bunch of ladders. I just want these to function and punch paper.

After 50 rounds, the pistol was so hot I could hardly hold it to punch the empties out. Firing those same rounds in my H&R wasn't so bad, but it wasn't anything Unique or IMR4227 can't do.
I think the two most misunderstood powders in the handloading world are IMR 4227 and AA 5744. They are both really very useful powders and easy to work with; they just have a limited repertoire. Used properly, they are superb performers. Too bad the price for each has suffered from price bloat since the plandemic.

Titegroup does run surprisingly hot. It’s not so bad in 9mm, but I’ve tried it in 40S&W and 44Special, it’s almost unbearable to shoot much volume. I would guess 45ACP will also run hot.

I’ve never found it to be dirty though. Maybe lighter loads are cooler and dirtier?

As much as I don't like TiteGroup... it seems to work well in the 9mm. Granted, I'm running it in a poly pistol... so it doesn't turn into a giant heatsink. The only thing I can say positive about TiteGroup is... it sure does seem to last forever. I loaded up 500rds of 9 a few months ago... I think the level in the TG can went UP, not down.

When I try any new-to-me powder, I buy three of the smallest containers it comes in - except Promo which only comes in 8’s. I burn the first can/bottle in every caliber recommended just to get to know the powder’s personality. The second bottle is for trying out-of-the-mainstream loads, just to get an idea what it can do. The third is for making whatever it excelled in. I’m using my last bottle of TiteGroup for .380ACP FMJ and 9mm Makarov FMJ because that’s where it really shines. I won’t buy more because Accurate No.2 also really shines there and doesn’t run as hot. It’s not that TiteGroup is a bad powder or doesn’t perform well, it’s just that there’s other powders that do what it does as well or better without the heat and scorched chamber walls.

4.6 gr Titegroup with Xtreme 230 gr RN, COL 1.250" works well for me in 1911

Good load in 45. I do get scorched cases in 45 and 9 but I recently used it on 44 mag and cases are not scorched.

I have loaded some .45 with 4.4 grains of titegroup. 230 grain LRN. Chrono was averaging about 800fps and they were punching paper.

Curious what y’all may run to get better case fill? 4.6 grains of TG leaves a lot of room for a double charge.
