.45 Colt Brass

Was doing some Spring brass cleaning and ran across a bunch of .45 Colt brass.

As I was cleaning them, I noticed that I had two different types in the batch, some have a, (because I cannot come up with the correct term), 'rim', but most do not.

What do I need to be aware of before I reload the ones with the 'rim'?

The .45 Colt has a very small rim diameter, and Winchester and Remington have been making them for about 100 years +, so they know what they're doing. Your cases are probably very close to the same. Measure them with a caliper and find out if there is significant difference in the two rims, but there probably isn't.

Thanks for the reply, but I guess I mis-lead you with my term 'Rim'

I'm talking about the ring indented in the brass near the mouth of the brass...

Oh, are you talking about the cannelure? That's a small indentation around the circumference of the case. This was originally intended to prevent bullet setback, but these days is more for decoration than anything. If that's what you're talking about, it will get ironed out with shooting and sizing for the most part. It's not something to worry about.

I have some of both as well. They all load just fine. Like Fred said, after awhile the cannelure will iron out some.

FWIW-

The Winchester cases are of FAR higher quality than the remington cases, IMNSLE. Don't worry about the cannelure in the least, ReloaderFred gave you the scoop on it.
