.45 vs .40

it may have been mentioned here already I don't recall, but if you get a 40 XD, you can have a 357 Sig with a simple barrel swap.

scubie,

I'm pretty sure the M&P barrels can be swapped too, at least when the .357sig barrel is available.

I'm really just wanting opinions about a specific pair of pistols.

Furthermore, and I mean no disrespect, but Papaster was specifically inquiring about the M&Ps, not the XD.

XD's are great pistols though. I'm currently considering an XD45 as an addition to my collection.

ok, I've only read the first couple of posts on that M&P reliability thread, but in the first couple he's already had 7 malfunctions each, and that's a good thing?

I think you're looking at the notes for the compact. The full size has had over 2200 rounds through it with 5 malfunctions. 3 of those malfunctions could possibly be attributed to hard primers on the ammo (or potentially a light strike from the striker). I think that's more than an acceptable rate of reliability.

Maybe it is just me, but my 45ACPs seem to kick less than my 40S&W...but then my 380 Walther kicks more than any of these...go figure...

tydephan,
that link for the MP-pistol forum was interesting. Followed leads to a press release promising extended mags available with a total of 14+1 capacity. Making my decision a little easier! Thanks for the info.
Oh, and no kidding on the bright background from Mr. Burwell.

I would feel a lot better sending my pistol to Mr. Burwell or Mr. Bowie (Bowie Tactical) for a M&P trigger job IF I had a 1911-style thumb safety on my gun. That means the .45, as it's the only model currently available with that option.
And no, I've not heard/read any more than rumors about the hi-cap (13+1) .45 M&P mag.

Papaster, I've read the same stuff about the higher capacity magazines. Only one way to find out...

Just sent the following email to S&W:

Will high capacity (13 or 14-round) magazines be produced for the M&P45? If so, is there an expected date for release?

I am debating purchasing a polymer 45 and have narrowed the decision between the M&P45 and the XD45. Obviously, the XD wins the capacity category, but I’ve read rumors of a pending 14rd magazine for the M&P.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll post the response when I receive it.

Noticed no one commented on the accuracy issue. Some will call it internet folklore, but I've had several .40's and I'd swear that they are inherently less accurate than a .45 in a similiar platform. Could be the sharp, torquing recoil characteristics of the round, who knows. Got rid of all the .40's, don't miss 'em. Sticking with 9mm's and 45's for this guy:)

thanks for the good news! I really am heavily leaning toward the 45 now. I appreciate everyone's opinions. I think this has helped. Still open to whatever anyone would have to say...

I personally love the .40 cal. I have my reasons, but it is a great combination of energy delivered (mass x velocity) and # held in magazine. Many LEOs use the .40 cal and there must be a reason why.

I am also an LEO who carries a department issued 40 S&W. I have one question to consider. What does everyone else carry? If you are actually in a firefight that requires a reload there is a high probability it will require multiple reloads. Most firefights go one way or the other, very few shots fired, or lots and lots of lead in the air. If your buddy has to throw you an extra mag, what is he carrying and vice versa.

If that isn't a consideration and S&W is coming out with a higher capacity mag for the 45, then go with the 45. That is an easy choice for me at that point.

Maybe you just need to flip a coin. It seems like they both get good reviews. The .40 is cheaper to shoot and with higher capacity, but here in the USA the .45 still seems to be the top dog.

As a fellow LEO I would find out what most of thre departments in your area carry. I know up this way most departments have gone to .40 so that was a major factor in my decesion. After shooting a 40 it is not a bad round to shoot at all. My vote would be for the M&P40

why not just get everything and end the endless debate this vs that?
9 vs 40 vs 45 posts get old fast. Get EVERYTHING.

This is my mission.

Glocks:
Have: 9mm (19, 26), 40cal (22)
Need: 45cal (21)

M&P:
Have: 9mm (full size and compact), 40cal (full size)
Need: 40cal (compact), 45cal (full size)

XD:
Have: None
Need: All

Afterall, variety IS the spice of life, no?

Did anyone else notice the velocities for the .45 federals on pages 8 and 9 they were in the 600s fps range?!?!?!!! Is this some kinda misprint???????

Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

...

600s fps is still faster than any human trying to run away in one second over the length of 2 football fields, then get hit by a frying-pan bullet, somewhere between the 10yd and 50yd line in .04 secs or less.

Papaster,

Nice to have someone the like of which would post on THR becoming an officer in Richardson. I am curious if you have to live in Richardson to be an officer here? I see your location is in Plano and I have wondered about the rule.

All of my dealings with Richardson PD officers have always made me happy to live here. I hope it is just as good to be working on the force.

Although I am not an expert on the question, I'll take a stab at it. Although Richardson citizens are all pretty good, with most of the city just middle class residential neightborhoods, some notable shootouts have happened in the last few years. The shootouts have always involved multiple suspects (the one I recall vividly had 4 with AK47s). I could be wrong, but it seems most shootings in Richardson start somewhere else with fleeing gunmen and our cops are called on to bring them down.

Although ideally officers would bring down criminals with a single shot, these shootouts generally last a while. So I would go for either more penetration of car doors and the like, if that is really an option, or I would go for more shots.

Last, wear your %*^)# vest! Many DFW cops don't wear them because either they got one that does not fit right or because of the heat. Its fool hearty because they provide substantial help in car crashes, which is the leading cause of death for Texas officers.
